honor cali tribes at cali pow wows
yo what up with the pow wow orginizors not inviting or having cali tribes at the pow wows. It was cool at oroville cause the pomo were invited. I would be good for other tribes to see cali indians way but hardly no pow wow here in cali even do that. Were still here man and the orginizors need to honor the first people of cali.

Here in Southern California, most of the small weekend powwows do honor the local tribes. They're able to perform their respective bear dances and other honor dances. And, I am also one who is tired of seeing the Aztec dancers, I'm always bumping into them at Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles everyday. But if the Aztec dancers want to mimic the plains tribes then why not. It seems that ebonics mimicry is prevalant here in powwows.com so if we can talk and write like the African Americans then anybody should be able to dance and look like Native Americans.

Did someone say my name? Oh it's you quickie. One of these dayz your gona have to tell us how you got your name cause, it sounds like a pornstar name:Naughty Ok , now about the topic, just about all casino tribes honor us and sponcer contests for us. On the other hand at the college pw's , UCLA and Long Beach do a lil but not much. There still seem's to be a bit of pregidice out there still. There's this lady out here that has even been asked to leave because of her behavior. She claim's to be Tonga , but nobody claims her. It's her behavior that even embarrase's me. She's rude ,she dance's her tradish style in the arena but has no regard for other dancers. She just about nearly knocks into people.

WallFlower, I'm in trouble now. My wife refuses to speak to me now. My children won't come home from school. My sisters won't give me 50% of their contest winnings. My life is in a shambles.:wall:

In my opinion, California, although we are the state with the largest Native population with over 300,000, the majority are not from the California tribal communities. Many are relations from the Relocation Program of 1952 and bringing and sharing the pw way of life.
I'm sure you know this already, but in the eyes of US government, some 80 tribes with more than 70,000 California Indians are considered "non-Indians", even though our ancestors roamed California centuries and centuries before the non-Indians arrived. Currently, California has 36 tribes, mind you more than any other state, struggling and fighting for federal recognition, an incredibly slow, costly and very often a futile process for all involved. (Currently, one of my tribes is struggling with this process). Then we have the issue of tribal identity, who decides who is going to be accepted into the tribe. Who'se "more" Indian? Does going to pws make a person more Indian? Does living on the rez/rancheria make one tribal member more Indian? Some bands of certain tribes are federally recognized, but another band in the SAME tribe is not....does this make them more Indian? What of the 104 recognized tribes not enrolling any new members because they fear it will mean less federal Indian dollars to go around? I guess what I'm trying to say is, there are handfuls of California Indians but many are secretive in sharing the traditions with 'outsiders', or we do share but only for 'invited guests', or in many cases there's a large group that are Indian by blood but so lost in today's society of "what their Indian identity" is, that all they really have is the pw way of life. Then you have many who've even been adopted and are learning on their own initiative of "who they may be" and until one can reunite with their birth families, pws are sometimes the only connection. Some are fortunate and blessed to find their families and hopefully learn their traditions and the like, but sadly, many won't. Sure, I'd like to see more California dances, songs, and even games being shared at the pws, but many times the committees are reluctant to 'change' things. I think this is why "Big Times" work so well for the CA tribes...;)

Yes Gold Toothed Dancer I too agree.
Perhaps if more California Tribes went to the committee personally and asked for some 'air time'. We might be seen and heard more. I would be happy to share our songs. Blessings to You All. :) |

Air time is the answer I mean man most peeps don't even know cali indians are around. They think indians living in cali are the only ones.
I agree on the relocation deal bringing in all the plains indians to cali and thats got alot to due with so many cali indians not wanting to know there cali ways. Not saying its bad just saying we need to be represented more in cali indian country. If more of us from all cali tribes represented our dances I think the respect would be there just like wallflower said. We aren't seen so when some of us do dance in our cali traditional way we are seen as weerdos or looked down cuz we aren't in grass or fancy bustle or for the ladys fancy or jingle. I think the aztecs dancers get more respect more then us cali peeps and there the peeps that pratically wiped us out the spanish with their missions and the mexicans. Lets see the cali peeps get out to the pow wows and dance and start representn cause all I been hearing on the news is bad shyt about cali peeps cause of the casinos but shyt man were more then just casinos werer a proud peep and we have beatiful songs maybe not on drums but we got our bird, clapstick, whistle, rattle, bear, deer antler songs and we got to show them we are here man. I have joined a committee pow wow but you got the bosses that don't bujj for nothing and I finally walked out but for all you committees out there just remember whose land your on and honor us in some way!
