Thumbs up not ashamed

as a cali native from different tribes not known to alot of other us tribes and even canada I'm not ashamed of who I am. I bring this up because there is a drum group here in cali made up of mostly cali natives but they sing on a plains tribe drum and don't admit to there roots. I see some cali natives (some family) who dance out of cali teachings like jingle or traditional. Some do in fact partecipat in our cali ceremonys but it just seems like they are ashamed to say they are cali native. I know some who claim to be something they aren't and then when they are called on it they lie and say they didn't say they were from such and such tribe. I guess I'm just mad because alot of cali natives got to be proud of our history and traditions. Are there others out there who know people like that. ashamed of what tribe or clan they are?

I know of such people I met a few when i was in school at D.Q. U. these guys were just powow guys and didnt do much in the way of Cali style dancing even in my own neck of the woods we have fiesta days in Santa Barbara and at the mission they have spanish, and mexican dancing well anyways the Chumash tribe out there were finally invited to perform so we went there and when they came out they were dressed powwow style and dancing to a Redbull c.d. one of their members (I dont recall his name ) went up there and put em in check right on stage in front of everybody which I thought was cool..they should of came out representing their tribe and style cuz now them wasicus are really gonna think we all live in teepees and dress that way!! Although Im Lakota and Chumash I respect both sides of my culture. I powwow and sing on a drum and I also go to Bear Dance and sing with clap stick and rattle!! I helped build that arbor they have at D.Q.U. for a reason not for another powwow but to have Big Time for all the Cali Brothers out there I was only there for the first two they had but there was alot of dancers and different groups ( I recorded a tape of The Chumash singing as well as most of the others ) With permission of course but any ways I jam out to those tunes just like other NDNs jam out to powwow jams some of my bros from over this way ask me what the hell is that I say Cali Style!!jams any ways I hope to be a Bear Dancer soon theres alot of responsibility involved with that though so I need to make sure that im ready for it ..... I talk to much .......Dokca.... :D

Hey Thank Gold Tooth for saying it like it is.......That's why my kidz do both sides.......mine (cali ) and thier dad's Lakota. Although we do PW a little, the kids know it's just that.... Pow Wowing, and they are really proud of thier Cali side. Espcially when they were in 4th grade and they learn about Cal Natives in school..... Shoot my girl was all proud when she could talk freely about who she was in her classroom, and all her classmates were so interseted in what she had to share.

HEy was any of you Cali Natives at teh Cali ndn conference last weeknd?

That cool ndnzkidz5 about you teaching yer kidz and all. Do they know the cali dances to not just the powwowing. I ask because it just seem like I never see cali proud of who they are. even on here it seem like only a few are down for represennin the cali way. All my sisters kids know the cali way just wonderin is all.
I drove to san manual and missed the cali conference how was it.

Yes Gold tooth ...Iam work very hard making sure they know their CAli ways. POw Wowing just a side thing ..aye.... no really our my priority is to teach them Cali ways......my husband teaches them Lakota ways....poor kids we are in a "war" over whoz Launge they will speak frist.... In fact they will pick a calp stick over a drum stick any day. Plus since we live in Cali and my mom lives close to me they get more of my ways. We only get back to my husbands rez twice a year and so they are not around his people as much.

Any way thanks for starting this thread it's cool to meat other Cali skins

:)

Recently the Gabrielino/Tongva nation had a program here in
West Los Angleles which included some of their dances. These
were very different from the type of dancing seen at powwows;
the step was a simple running step, and the dances were set
or formation dances. Anyone familiar with Scottish or English
country dancing would have recognized many of the figures:
cloverleafs, figure-8's, etc. The women's dance outfit was a
blouse and skirt; footwear was an assorted variety of sandals,
mostly store-bought. (Native southern Californians with the
exception of the Chemehuevi and Mountain Cahuilla were
sandal wearers not moccasin wearers.)

Yo wacapi wanji I know wht your talking about my sisters daughter had a report on indians and all they learned was the sioux and navaho peeps. My sister took some acorn bread to pass out and talk about cali indians. All the kids kept asking was how do you make a t-pee and can they make paper head bands. I can see where you got mad man cuz the chumash are coastal and are far from pow wow way. Maybe our cali ways are to much for some to grasp maybe we are to proud to share but whatever it is maybe the pow wow is not for us cali peeps. I like pow wow and all I mean man I go out of my way to go to some but maybe I'm asking to much for cali natives to dance more at them. I guess its cool we have our certain dances but I want more peeps to know we are here that all. Alamorous most cali dances are done in a small circle and most had so many dancers the dances were done in place. Done in all directions but unlike you'd see at a pow wow totally different. The woman stay surrounding the cirlce outside because they are the purifiers the ones that protect life and nurture this including the prayers all take part in.

Hey goldtooth check this out now Im not dissin on my powwow peeps cuz Im a powwowin fool!!! but on my Cali side Ill tell you what you were sayin about Cali guys not sharing alot is true example is the Bear dance now thats a powerful ceremony right there... but its not brought into the mainstream because it is still sacred. I mean look its out in the boonies no electricity everything is done old school by fire light!! and thats where the power is. Although I do consider the powwow somewhat sacred but to me its more of a social time to catch up with old friends to dance and compete in a friendly way to hear some good jams gorge myself on all that fattening ndn grub score some C.D.s and maybe snag oh, aye!!! but when its time to get serious its either road trip back to S.D for Sundance or back to So Cali for Bear Dance to recharge my batteries so to speak. Like Ive said in the past they need to start having more big time powwows cuz those are all Cali style dancing and I still think that the various powwow committees in the State should incorporate more Traditional cali Style dancing and singing in their powwows not just something to watch for dinner break. If Southern guys can dance at a Northern powwow and vise versa then Cali should be represented with equal amount of respect especially in our home state.....Dokca:D
