Question switch dancing

I'm fairly new to the pow wow circuit attending only pow wows in the South. I've read and seen a few pictures of switch dancing from other pow wows but have not been to any that feature this dance. I'm just curious to know if there are any ladies out there that do this and how they enjoy it? Also in your opinion what pow wows have the best switch dancing. Thanks for your time and response.

I've done and I think it's a lot of fun. I switched with my husband and he's a straight dancer. Had a few straight dancers tell me that I did alright. The Meherrin powwow usually does one every year. They hold a blanket out and there is money put in there. The winner of the "women's" and "men split the money. Maybe one day we will actually hold this as a special for a sizable amount of money. Last year there were people who came back the next day just for the switch dancing. It's kind of hilarious especially to see bid ole burley men in dresses. The Meherrin's powwow is the last weekend in October in Ahoskie, NC. I should be posying more info about it on the calendar within a few days. Come check us out!

_____

I've tried it once at the Manitoba Chiefs Powwow in Winnipeg - just to say I did it.

I danced real hard and had a great outfit. But,

I won a consolation only because . . .

there were some other competitors who were getting into it way tooooooo much (Closet cross dressers . . . Maybe?)

Yes Ray won. He was hilarious. Don't think I've ever met another "women's traditional dancer" quite the same! I thought it was lot of fun. Good to have you back this year. Can't wait to see everyone. Hope it another success and bigger and better than last year. We have Stoney Creek as Host drum this year and I was able to increase the drum competition money. So we'll see. Depends on how my funds run, I might hold a switch dance special. We'll see. Come on over, down, up everyone. I'm posting the Meherrin powwow on the calendar today. Pencil us in. It's always a great powwow. Has that home feeling (of course I could be Biased :D ), but I have heard others say the same thing!

:D I will be the MC for the Meherrin Powwow and I am definitely going to throw in a switch dance or two or three or four or whatever.:)

I might even be persuaded to throw on a dress. I did it when I pledged my fraternity but don't tell anyone.

I just say let's have fun.:blow:
