Pontiac

The grandmother looked sad
I asked her why
She gave a feeble smile
Wiped a tear from her eye
“The Christian Nation is coming today
To take all the old cars away.
They are sending out a delegation
To help clean up the reservation.”
It didn’t seem so bad to me
There were old wrecks as far as the eye could see.
I really didn’t know what to say
So for a while I let the silence lay.
At last, in a voice many years had made weak
The grandmother did finally speak.
She pointed to a rusty Dodge.
“We used that one to haul wood to the lodge.
That Pontiac still has one good eye.
Been to Washington D.C. four times, maybe five.
We were young and wild then, restless and brave,
But the government didn’t see it that way.”
She pointed to what I guessed was a Ford.
“That one’s the place where I received the Lord.”
And that statement took me by surprise
As she looked right through me with her Indian eyes.
“And that one” she said, which had not four wheels, but two
“That was my husband’s truck. We call him Old Blue.”
Old Blue hadn’t moved in fifteen years
Someone had taken the wheels and stripped out the gears.
It was parked exactly where her mate had died
Driving home across a plain of grass tall and wide.
The rumble of the tow truck made quite a din
And the driver wore an ominous grin.
“Look at this mess” he said. “It’s a sin.
It’s gonna take all day to haul them all in.”
The grandmother turned away from me.
“This part I do not want to see.”
She slowly climbed into her double-wide trailer
On wooden stairs that were about to fail her.
And I stood and watched as the cars went away
With a whole new perspective of what beauty was that day.
