The Pow Wow

The Pow Wow

As we entered the gates I felt rush of excitement as I heard the beating of the drums
I knew in my heart that me and my ancestors were finally one
Thunder Mountain they called this place
and now I felt this spirit filled space
I and my family walked over to the arbor there
and in my mind I saw my grandmothers and their faces full of love and care
I saw young girls whirling in fancy shawls around and around
and in my daughters eyes there was awe to be found
She asked in hushed tones Mom can I do that too
as we watched the dancers whirl around with a native spirit so true
there was the candy dance and intertribal dances stuff I heard about but didnt understand
But I knew this was the Great Spirits Land
I felt every ancestor of native blood ring through my heart
and knew now where I was to do my part
we watched and listened and learned some questions my children asked why
why do they retire the flags and found to keep my grandmothers hope alive
so we decided we were coming back tomarrow somehow someway
tomarrow another step in this experience another day
we arrived to the mc Jack Of Many Colors telling our story for the veterans dance true
and My daughter did what in her heart she had to do
I watched my daughter as she carried the pow mia flag for an uncle as my grandmother did
I watched with tears knowing my grandmothers spirit was right there and some feelings I hid
I watched my son sing songs he had never sung
knowing now my children and I with our heritage was finally one
we saw our first grass dance the crow hop the switch dance all was amazing and a thrill
but best of all it wasnt on tv the excitement the honour the knowing we belonged was so real
it is now almost a week to the day when we first stepped on Thunder mountain
and every day we look at the pics and talk and know that well go back to that place
and see our new friends each wonderful caring loving face
I and my children have vowed to volunteer and be a part of that community true
Its what for many long years Ive been trying to do
My daughter is going to learn to be a fancy shawl dancer
and me I will learn the traditional dance too
but most of all I remember what one man I met said His name is Running Bear
you see Ive been afraid to let my gifts shine
and he said quite poetic at the right time
for me to take a chance step out of the box just do it he said
and ever since last Sunday those words ring clear in my head
so with a heart full of my first real Pow Wow I step out
here I show my art my poetry and pictures of what Me Bluedove is about
this Pow Wow will stay in our hearts forever more true
because we as a family now know what we are to do
so as another drum beats and we find that to be native is in the heart
The Pow Wow and Thunder Mountain taught us to do our part
