On the Plains

Grandfather said
When he was three,
Our people were proud,
Our people were free,
At peace with the earth,
In harmony,
On the Plains.

Grandfather said
When he was four,
Wasicu came from a distant shore
and killed the buffalo
more and more,
On the Plains.

Grandfather said
When he was five,
Wasicu took indians dead or alive.
They seemed to want nothing at all to survive,
On the Plains.

Grandfather said
before he died
He hoped the wasicu would stop their lies,
so our people could once again live with pride,
On the Plains.
