The lines of what "traditional dancing is" have become blurred. I have seen Eastern/Atlantic Coast dancers who compete in both the Men's Traditional category at one powwow and the Eastern War Dance at another powwow. In both cases, the men dancers wore 1700's and 1800's outfits.

In some cases, they really looked "traditional." In other cases the way they danced and dressed was subject to their own interpretation.

One guy I saw during a men's traditional dance exhibitiion wore a deer head -complete with horns. When he danced, he hopped around the arena on two feet with his hands clasped close to his chest. Every now and then, he would stop and start sniffin' around.

Hmmmmmm?

That sounds like the "Ole Jackalope" dance.

he was probably checking to see if anyone else smelled his fart. you really need to be careful of what you see and hear here in the east. there are alot of people out here who THINK they know what they're talking about or doing. do yourself a favor and do as much research as you can. i can tell you i saw something hoaky once and actually e-mailed the nation these people claimed to be from. needless to say they e-mailed me back saying not only did they not know the people in question, nor the so called "dance" they were exhibiting.
