packing a bustle ???

Hey , I have a question for all you "traveling" pow-wow peoples.
When you fly , how do you get your bustles ( bigger bustles) broke down into a suitcase ? Or do you put it in a box ? Completely dis-assemble it ? Bigger suitcase ? (LOL) Any airline restrictions ? Help me out here ......I have a good sized bustle and my uprights are fixed ( don't come apart easily ) Thinking of flying to a pow-wow and trying to figure out the best way to pack it up . Any suggestions ??? Thanks !

one thing you might try is call the airline, tell them what you have and ask how to pack it. in any event be prepaired to have it searched but security, ive not seen your bustle, but this means it may be handled by people youd rather not handle it.

another option would be UPS or FEDEX. you can ship the bustle ahead of you and have it insured incase of damage.

other than that i have seen travel cases people have made of plywood. almost like an oversized bow case, im sure we could probably figure something out for you for future use but im not sure if we could get it done before your flight

got some measurments?

Many men I know have them so they come detached from the "bun" or back board, then they roll the feathers together and stick them in it's round case. I have an older man friend that always uses Fed-Ex to send his regalia ahead. From experience, if you take any eagle or animal parts through the airlines, be prepared with your paperwork and/or tribal ID, you never know when you will be the one asked about your stuff.

WW makes a good point. Can you unhook your bustle from your backboard? You can use one of those 'sonotubes' used for pouring round cement footings. They also make 'end caps' for those tubes. You can pick the tubes up at home depot or at your favorite jobsite where they use cement or mortar!LOL

Don't forget...you can duct tape the ends!

That sounds like a good idea.....still trying to figure it out... May be for another time....I talked to my daughter and her man , and they want to go too ! So we may just rent a car and drive it ! We're only about 10 hours from Austin , Tx...solve the whole dilemma ! LOL
Thanks for the ideas though , and if anyone else has good ones I'd like to hear them too !

We discussed this on here once upon a time in here and there were some good ideas if I remember correctly. Someone said they used a bass drum case from a music store. To take Joe's Dad's idea a little further you can also use PVC and glue endcaps on, they even have endcaps that have screwed fittings. Most people I know that dance and travel on the airlines a lot have designed their bustles to come apart quick and easy and pack away small. I have seen some big bustles that would nearly fit in a shoe box.

Thanks , that would be another consideration for another trip ! Re-design the backboard to break down easier....Hmmmm Gives me lots to think about ! The bustle breaks down pretty good , but when I built it , I fixed the uprights to the backboard solid ( permanant) so it would be hard to remove them....that's what I have to re-design.... Lots to think on !

I use 1/8" stainless steel welding rods bent in a v-shape and attached to the backboard. I then have stainless steel tubing that slides over those rods for easy removal.

I do something similar to Joe's Dad. The base on my new bustle is made of a piece of latigo, folded in half. I used metal rod roughly 3/16" (like the use for election signs) belt in a U shape. Then I drilled wooden dowels that slide over the wire.
My son's base is made out of plywood and has a 1/8" wire bent in the V shape. His has dowels that were drilled out too.

Lightbulb

When my friend made his new bustle, he built it so it could be broken down to fit in a large tool box from Home Depot. The tool box even has a few compartments on top for some repair items.

I am not a fan of big bustles. Mine can be broken down easily - set up easily and can fit completely in my suitcase along with my fan.

I'm just now designing / putting together another one even smaller without any extensions. I could probably fit two bustles in the suitcase.

BTW, does anyone here have old pictures ( before 1950 ) of tradish dancers with giant bustles like they have nowadays?

Since nobody has old pics, could I assume that huge bustles are not " tradish" but perhaps a new trend?
A fashion statement?

I don't know.
