Good deal. I'm at work, so I don't have much time to give a very appropriate response. How long have you been dancing? I'm not a dancer myself, but it's something I'm compelled to get started one of these days. I'm Chitimacha, and dancing is virtually nonexistent around the rez here. That's unfortunate! I need to start piecing together regalia. I have a roach and a few other small items. I really need to get started on a bustle. Any suggestions on whom I could seek to help have one made? I'll stay in touch. Please do the same.

Middle of the Sky,
New Orleans is not much of a center for Native activities. You can't count the "Mardi Gras" Indians. LOL The Natives that live in the New Orleans area are prety well scattered. You'll find higher concentrations near coastal towns south and west of New Orleans where a good majority still work in the seafood industry (mostly shrimp trawling) or the oil field. The nearest organized group, as mentioned by Machine, are the Houmas. Here is a link to a good site for information on Natives in our area. http://www.biloxi-chitimacha.com/ Our powwow season is spring and fall. The earliest spring event is usually the Houma Powwow in mid-March. Glad you liked New Orleans. Please encourage others to visit. While the tourist areas are fully functioning, the area's economy is still suffering the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Maybe next time you're this way, you can sit in with our community drum. Our practices are a real nice family event. Take care. Ron |
