Feather Prep

Hey:

I am having some problems with my feathers they look spotty... like little mites or something have been having lunch on them.

I just got some Mawcaw feathers any thing that I can do to stop this and/or prevent it?

Should I steam them?

thanks

I've heard of all sorts of ways. just do a search on google im sure you will find more. I've heard moth balls. just put them in a plastic box with the moth balls and that should kill them. Also heard freezing and pet stores sell mite spray. So like I said there are a ton of remedeys out there but to me these seem like the most plausable.

Feather care

Freezing the infected feathers will help detroy the mites. It works well with any item that may have insect larvae in it.

I purchased from mite killer used for pet birds and sprayed some feathers I had. It worked pretty well.

Before you store any other feathers with those having insect damage, treat the damage feathers first or you'll just introduce more "food" for these little pests.

White gas like you would use for camp stoves like Coleman works great. That is what alot of taxidermists use. It also gets most blood, droppings, bugs/mites, and grease out of the freathers. After they are cleaned with the white gas, wash them in a nice shampoo bath and then a conditioner soke. Dry, steam, and preen the freathers and you should be good to go.
