Thanks for your input.. I was hoping I hadn't pulled a G-Dub (put my foot in my mouth inadvertantly). So.... How do you use yours? I have a ton of assorted parts, wings and looseys. Any advice would really be valueable. I promised I'd use them and don't want to go back on my word. Also, I read the thread on related topics and read the story there about how Crow got his color. I had never heard that story before and wondered if there were other connotations on 'ol Crow that I should be aware of... |

Crows are incredibly intelligent. Smart enough that it has been argued by more imaginative scientists that they have a language and a culture (the crows that is, not the scientists). Check this book out: In the Company of Crows and Ravens http://www.amazon.com/Company-Crows-.../dp/0300100760 I suspect that crows aren't worn as much anymore because they aren't as glamorous as a golden eagle. Most of the literature points to dog soldier societies making extensive use of crow and raven feathers and parts. the society link could be another reason you don't see them in some areas eh? Feathers are typically used for bustles and bonnets. How I made my bustle is mostly flat looking. The bustle is serveral layers of feathers laying flat (hanging loose) in overlapping (top over bottom) rows sewn directly onto broadlcoth (the back apron - which is short) I have two trailers that come out from underneatht the short apron part that have rows of overlapping feathers - just like the aprons. It's easy as heck to make - the only tricky part is making sure the rows are all straight. Which really isn't that tricky at all. sort your feathers by length before hand - it looks better if all the feathers in teh same row are similar in size. I have the smaller feathers on top and the larger feathers underneath on my bustle. I guess i'm saying to be organized or it might like sloppy - which i suppose might be someone's style... but tis' not mine. I spose that's it. |

Thanks for the reply; I absolutley concurr-those guys are really, really smart! I'll try to pick up that book.
I wondered if this had anything to do with clan or society "proprietary" issues, so to speak. I sure don't want to go there, except to know what groups used them. These things vary from Nation to Nation, and if the groups that utilize these for clan or societal issues are not in the same area as my Nation, I propose that perhaps its accecptable to use them. The other side of the coin is that the trend these days is for flashier items. I checked and a houndered or so people read this thread and only you two guys responded. No offense meant, but I wonder if this is representative of another issue. Does anyone else have any input? If the "lack of flash" is the only issue, I'd like to know... Thanks again! |
