Bustle construction
Well I have 3 brothers and i've made a few bustles along the way. Guess i'll talk about the last one I made.
I started with small dowel rods that i sharpened with a pencil sharpener, then covered the tip in gorrila glue and placed it into the feathers. I glued a small leather loop at the bottom of each of the dowels and drilled a small hole through each one about 3/4ths of the way up. I wrapped all the dowels with yarn all the way up (can be done with colored electrical tape.) With the spikes I used a larger dowel and drilled a hole up through the bottom each one. I then used screw in eyehooks on each one to attack the bustle to. I took fishing line and ran it through the botom loops placing a bead between each one. After I finished looping them all I placed this thing (basicly its a piece of fishing tackle that allows you to switch lures and stuff it unhooks from itself cant remember the name) I did the same with the holes i drilled but placed more beads between them. and finished wth the same things on the ends. Now I use a backboard for my bustle two holes drilled near each other in the center. I also like to drill holes towards the edge in the center to attach a belt. I had a thick backboard so on top I drilled 2 holes and glued wires sticking up from each one. These will hold the spikes up. I have a thick piece of leather in the center with holes drilled every every 5 feathers or so to tie the small loops to. And I drill 2 holes in center to line up with the holes drilled in the center of the backboard. Now assembly and dissambly isnt too difficult. The bottom clips together. The spikes slide onto the wires on the backboard. The Clips on the upper part of the bustle clip onto the eyehooks on the spikes. I tie the bottom of my feather to the leather circle and then pull a string through the holes in the centerand tie it off. Next time I'm back home ill take some pics cuz i may be a little confusing. |
