Hello Everyone,
I just got some Icelandic sheep furs that are 10" x 12". But I can't figure out the best way to tie them on. The only ones I've seen were 2"-3" tall pieces. Does anyone know of a good way to back these pieces so that I can tie them on?

back them with a piece of canvas leave about four inches above the top put eyelet on the side and you can lance them onwith shoe strings then put your bells on top

well said Rodond that's how my brother would always do his.and he always kept a dog brush with them for brushing them out to keep them looking good.

Should I make the canvas come out from the side too, put eyelets all the way down the side(like 4 maybe)?

Doesn't hurt to have an eyelet half way down. I also wrap an ace bandage on top of the canvas to hold the whole thing in place and then put the bells on top of that. I also sprinkle on a little baby powder when I am done brushing them out. If they get really dirty I wash mine in woolite wring them out the best you can and let air dry. Then when dry very carefully comb them out.

i only sew the top of the fur leaving the canvas open under the fur that way you can put eyelet in under without them showing

Sorry that I haven't posted this sooner, but I got my furs done and they look great. I'll try to get a pic up, Thanks for all your help.

Are there any traditional dancers that wear furs of this size(10x12)? I did not really get these for traditional dancing(I know most people wear 2"-3" furs around the ankle), but I would like to wear them very much. I was told that they are a fancy dance size fur, and should not be worn for traditional. What is your opinion on this?

I know there was a picture of a guy with them on here, but I can't find it now.

I hate to have to make another smaller pair, would it be totally wrong to wear them even though I'm not a fancy dancer? I have already been told not too by a guy in the lodge, but I would like a 2nd opinion.

I've never seen a real Tradish dancer wear Fancy dance furs. Wait ur an OA dancer.

If you've been told they are for fancy dance and not traditional, then you have an answer.

I -can- add that Earl Meshigaud Jr, an elder of my people and great grandson of Chief Meshicot, has written this about his ancestor:

"Abraham was born at Manitowoc in the year 1832. His Indian name was Meshicot, which means "hairy leg" in the Indian language. His name came from the legs of a Homed Owl whose legs are all fluffed with white feathers. That design/tradition is still used by some dancers who make leggings from the knee down to the ankle resembling that of the legs of birds."

I guess I'll make a smaller pair to wear for tradish.

Just so you know, I am trying to make all of my regalia the right way and I want to dance the right way. I do not appreciate your remark about me being a OA dancer, I tried to think of it as a joke, and you may have been joking, But I really am trying and that has nothing to do with the question I asked. I feel that I have done well so far, seeing that no one has cursed me out yet about being in the OA. This is wrong, no one should have to feel that way. I am in the OA and proud of it. I want to make the OA not as looked down upon by ndns and other dancers. Any help would be appreciated.

This is all I have to say about this, I wish it to go no farther.

This is all good information. Thank you all for sharing. It made me think of another question. Is it proper to wear the smaller furs around the ankle while wearing buckskin leggings too?
