Sunglass etiquette while dancing
Ok folks this is an etiquette question, is it ok to wear sunglasses while dancing? I've seen a few people do it, but I have heard that it is not proper to do so.

Don't see that it'd be wrong if there was a medical need - for instance macular degeneration is caused -in part- by UV exposure. People who have it are supposed to wear UV protection when they are outside.
"When in doubt ask" usually works out to be the best policy. For reasons of my own situation, I usually have to ask lots of questions of the committee before I go to a powwow... and even then I am circumspect until I am told it's ok by an elder or a head dancer. ~b2w |

I think they look bad, but I've been guilty of leaving a pair on because I forgot they were on. I noticed alot more elders wear them; and I would not have the nerve to question an elder about this, it's most likely they need them on-because they are their prescriptions that turn dark in outdoor light.

one of my good friends will hayes wears sunglasses. I have no problem with it. If that is your thing, do it. it IS your regalia. but if asked, im sure he wouldn't wear them. BUT, i cant keep on my normal glasses while dancing, much less sunglasses.

I was dancing in Muncie, Indiana (Yeah, I know... been going there for years, leave me alone)
I think it was 2002, or maybe 01'... One of the WWII vets came up to me, took off my glasses, and stomped on them... Lucky for me I paint my face, so they were oakly knockoffs... Being the cocky little SOB I am, I snagged a pair from his daughter, put them on, and went back out... It's a shame they were purple... His only words to me "Real indians can see without sunglasses". Well, around here, one of the elder vets, Frank Bush, passed away that year, and I'll tell ya, Indoors, or out, he always wore his sunglasses... Doesn't really matter anyway, guess the guys daughter wasn't a skin. If you wanna wear glasses, wear them, if it offends someone, then you know what to do, apologize, explain (if needed) and go on. If we spend the rest of our lives worrying about "Protocol" we aren't gonna learn a thing. |
