Advice on apron set
I am currently working on a project and wanted some advice from all of you out there. I have questions regarding the type of fringe I should put on an apron and sidedrop set. The set itself is going to be cloth (probably satin) in the colors of traditional Northwest Coast Salish art. My question is should I use white buckskin for the fringe, or some sort of ribbon. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks

If you're going w/ red on black, button-blanket looking designs, then I'd say go with the white buckskin fringe. It'd be a good color combo, plus, the buckskin fringe just looks better and moves/hangs better as it has more weight than the ribbon.

Now by tradish do you mean red, black, white, tradish? And by color do you mean OTHER THAN R,B and W?
Either way, I have seen some REALLY nice outfits that only used 2 or 3 colors. Black and Yellow, Blue and White, Pink and Purple... you can do alot with red white and black and keep the trad colors with a contemp outfit. |

I meant a totally traditional outfit. However, some of the design work that I am going to do on the apron set, along with my vest isn't really something you would see in a totally tradishional outfit. That is why I said I was struggling. I think you have helped me though. I feel better about the design and keeping the traditional colors in a contemporary outfit.

I've Questioned how to have both collor and tradition with the last outfit I made and so I figured out a way to have both, but I never did end up doing what I thought up so maby you can use this idea.
I like to have buckskin fringe and ribbon fringe glued or sewn to velcro. ( fabric stores call it hook and loop fastener) This way the fringe comes off for the washing of the garment. But anyway when you glue or sew the buckskin to the velcro if the pattern on the sidedrops or the aprin reaches the edge of the garment then continue in thoes spots with the the same color in ribbon glueg to the leather which is glued to the velcrow. So the top of the ribbon would be glued to the top of the buckskin fringe to match up with the same spot as the color that touches the edg. Or you could add onto the bottom edg or anywhere else by makeing ribbon tastles for thoes spots that just need more color. I did this by takeing used old .22 rifle shells and naileing a hole in through the bottom of the brass and pulling ribbon into the shell itself with sinew and glueing it in place, then takeing the extra sinew sticking out of the flat part and sewing and tieing it to whetever material needs it. I hope this is clear enough. If it isn't mail me at Iamtraditionalrally@yahoo.com |

I've used buckskin fringe, have no problems with it, but I like the feel, look, and movement of the cotton more, it tends to frey, but it adds to the old style look IMO, I'll post a pic soon. |
