old style dance regalia
Hey guys, im new to the forum, I am not Native American, but I do dance, I dance old style lakota sioux, early 1900s era regalia. Just wanted to know where I could find some information on Regalia from this time period. Mainly, I'm looking for a types of hand ornaments-clubs, gunstocks, warrior quirt etc. and some designs or tricks to fix up my bustle to a more accurate representation of the time period. I dance with a messy bustle, and just wanted to know what you guys thought...

Hi ND
Good to see you here asking questions. I also started in the BSA/OA but it wasnt until I left and became friends with powwow people that I learned the right ways. If you check the archives, this subject has come up many times. OA - old style and the bsa, etc, etc. There is more than enough info on the site already without openning up another can of worms. i mean no offense, but I want to let you know that there are some people on the site that will despise you and talk smack, but there are also those who will help. You just need to keep an open mind. As far as old style, there are some knowledgeable poeple on here that can help, will they, I dont know. Old style is rare these days unless it is a scouting event. I love old style and only know about 3 or 4 people east of the mississippi that know what they are doing. You dont "spice up" old style. Other wise it wouldnt be "OLD style". see. If you look at the old photos, nothing was flashy. except that guy with the goggles on but Im sure it was a joke. also the guy with the neck bustle on the front of his neck. If you are TRUE OLD STYLE you know the photos I talk about. As far as handheld items. stay away from antlers on a pole. Some people may say that you shouldnt carry a whip or quirt unless you are a whipman, some others dont care. So good luck. |

thanks for the info, actually i didnt really mean spice up as far as modernize, so i edited the post before anyone respnded, but what i meant was- to better represent the time period... sorry about my "whiteness.." thats what i am finding out that oldstyle is rare, but I love the style of dance, and the regalia.. tomorrow i can post some pictures of my regalia and you can tell me what you think...I have made it all by hand, but the breech clout is pretty- kit made..I'm going to change it, but thank you for your positive attitude toward informing me.
