Peyote Stitch

Si-Yo,
Hey all, I think I have decided on a design for my regalia. Does any one have any tips on how to Peyote stitch? My stick will probably be the last thing I do. But I will like to know, that way I can practice a little bit until I do the real thing. Thanks for all of your help guys!
Wa-Do,
Mike Silent Warrior

The peyote/gourd stitch video from inner circle is pretty good. Normally runs about $20, check the powwow store, crazy crow, noc bay, etc. It all depends on if you are going to do one, two or three drop as to how you get started.

I like 3 drop. Put enough beads on your nymo to wrap all the way around your stick. Make sure the number is divisable by 6, if not add or subtract to make it that way. Remove 1/3 of the beads. Your first row will have the remaining beads on it, wrap it around your stick and run the needle through the first bead. now pick up a bead, skip a bead then go through the next bead and pull tight. do that all the way around, when you get to the end go through the last 2 beads and start again.

Example for # of beads:

108 beads to go all the way around
108 divided by 3= 36 (take 36 beads off)
leaving 72 beads on your thread

Nice thing about the video is they are showing you step by step and you can rewind it as many times as you need too.

drops are the number of beads in a group that appear to drop down before the next group start.
I don't have anything small enough to load here, but you can do a search on peyote graph paper and find plenty of free downloads for one and two drop.

Like Kool said the video is the way to go, unless you have someone around to teach you.

I think that the directions above are pretty complete and you might try it before spending the $20.

Only differences from what I've done is that load the nymo with enough beads to rap the stick and I've always used the rule that the number of beads should be divisable by 3 not 6 as stated above.

Also after you get your first row on, you will probably want to fiddle a little bit to make sure that your diagonals are lining up right. If they are, adding the second and later rows is a breeze since then you really just thread a bead and go through the top bead of the next diagaonal repeat all the way around.

Once you get the trick of starting, it's really not too hard to do. Good Luck :-)
