Ettiquette Question
OK folks I know that etiquette various from location to location and sometimes powwow to powwow. Back in Louisiana, I was told that if you missed Grand Entry, you don't dance that session. Since moving to NC I've noticed some dancers who miss Grand Entry but dance the session. I would appreciate your responses, especially the NC crowd. I am back in school, with classes being on saturdays, and will be missing alot of powwows for the next year. Those that I might be able to go to I would like to dance in.

I've never heard any "rule" that says you can't dance if you miss grand entry. Grand entry isn't even a traditional part of the dance so what's the big deal. I wouldn't put too much stock into anything that goes on in Louisiana. They might know gumbo and shrimp etoufee', but not pow wows.

The Grand Entry came from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show around 1883. The primary purpose of the show was to put on a rodeo and glamourize the "wild west" with a parade of native american people in their best attire.
If you arrive after the Grand Entry, don't worry, you're on time - everyone else is just early! |

I've danced in quite a few locations and the only time I've heard that apply was for points during contests. I've never heard anyone say you can't dance because you didn't make Grand Entry. If you're able to dance, and just can't get your gear on in time for Grand Entry, just keep getting ready until you can dance. But don't join Grand Entry once your category is on the floor, though...

I have heard in the midwest region it is inappropriate to dance until after any War Mothers' songs if you have missed the grand entry. I have only been to 2 powwows set up that way, so you basically miss the first 3 songs after GE/Flag/Vet songs and then you're in. I have never heard anything except in contesting to the contrary.
