Hey all,
Ok, about 2 weeks ago one of my good friends gifted me a complete turkey tail. It is very beautiful. I have ponder for 2 weeks wether I should wait to hunt another turkey to and use it's tail feathers to make a bustle or use the feathers to make epolets and a visor. After alot of thinking I am going to make them into epolets and a visor. BUT, I have no clue on how to make them. If someone could please respond to this thread with their wonderful knowledge it would be GREATLY appricated. Thanks, Mike Silent Warrior

I hope you don't take this wrong and I will try to help you in a couple ways.
Perhaps no one has responded to your question because of your choice of feathers. If you look around at the dancers at a powwow, how many guys are sporting turkey feathers. If you are at a good size powwow, a couple maybe. Of those guys how many are using turkey feathers as epolets and/or visors. Not too many. It's because they just don't look right. You might be able to use wing feathers and make decent epolets if you are pretty creative. Tail feathers from a turkey just aren't the right size or shape. If I were you and I was going to use turkey feathers, especially tail feathers....I'd go with your first idea and save them for a bustle. Just a little advice from my point of view. Now to answer your question. Epolets are easy to make. Take a shoe string, leather thong, etc. and starting at the middle put on enough pony/crow beads to go from one shoulder to the other. But feather loops on your quils and start adding them one at a time to each side, putting beads in between to space them out the distance you want. After you add your feathers, add enough beads to come down a little. Then just tie your laces. That's one way of doing it anyway.
