I have used yarn before on things; what looks even better is embroidery floss, it just takes a bit more time to work with, but well worth it. It's not lumpy looking like yarn, and if you get some good colors with that shiny sheen on it, it looks much nicer than yarn.

WW is so right on embroidery floss. A good friend of mine made a fancy dance bustle set using it and it was AWESOME. I will try and get him to post a pic of them.

Ok this is part of the email I got from my friend. I was wrong it wasn't embroidery floss but crochet thread.

"Forgot to tell you that Andrew and I wrapped the extenders and feather
shafts with that small crochet thread and then we used a glue that we
spread all over the thread to hold it together. The glue wasn't Elmer's glue,
it was a glue that I got at Hobby Lobby for leather. It was in a white bottle
with a yellow label.

FIEBING'S TANNERS BOND LEATHERCRAFT CEMENT
About $5.00 per bottle for 4 ounces"

Ok can't post pic yet, will try again tomorrow.
