ROACH and Headharness
Ok folks another stupid question from yours truly: How many of you either use or have seen someone using a roach on a harness? Here is my problem, I have very short hair and need to use shoestrings to keep my roach on. A fewmonths back someone asked about a headharness to attach the roach onto. Whover that was, did you do it and how does it work?
Thanks, Jerry |

I've only seen a couple of traditional dancers wear a harness. I'm not wild about it. I've seen more grass dancers wear them than traditional dancers. To me, the harness fits more with the grass outfit. I'd just stick with the shoelaces.

Head Harness
I seen something that you may be talking about. It involves a headband. Front centre from your headband to the middle of your roach would be a sewn in peice of matierial to match your bald head, about 1/2 inch wide, from the front centre of your head band to the middle of the roach. the length of the matierial will be depending on the position of your roach on your head; how you wear the roach. I've seen these things beaded as well. Try it maybe that's what you meant.

Yeah, that was me. The reference on the harness was from Ben Hunt's, "Indian Lore."
No, I've not seen any Northern Traditional Dancers wearing the harness, only Grass Dancers. I said no to the Harness, went to wearing a leather showlace for a couple of wacipi's and in two more months, will have enough hair on the top of my head to go back to a warrior's braid. |

Thanks everyone for the input. I am going to wear my roach for a few powwows before making a harness. A friend lent me his the last time I wore a roach and it kept moving all over the place. Now that I have my own I can play with the shoe strings a little.
As for the long hair, I tried it one time. After my accident and I knew I would not be joining the Marines, I let my hair grow for 3 or 4 months without a haircut. Some of you mught be laughing now, I was getting a hair cut about every three weeks prior to my accident. I cannot not stand long hair on me. Must be the the rotc training in me. Jerry |

Roach slip?
That could be a mouthful. LOL. For my son who had long hair and short hair the best thing I found was to use a hair rag. I didn't like the looks of that so I sewed a hat from a nursing pattern. You know the one that nurses and doctors wear for surgery. He didn't like the strings or the elastic on it. He just wears that and on top of that is his headband and then the roach is tied onto his head. The material I use is not a No Slip fabric but does have enough grip that his roach doesn't slip and you can change the color of the hood to match your outfit. .
The Hood also covers his Hat Hair after sweating and then moving his headband around.... Can't be young and run around with hat head. LOL |

roach harness
I have heard of a roach harness and had it vaugly explained but i have not seen one up close. from what i understand though, you make a head band which either ties or velcro's in the back with one band going over youre head from you're forehead, where you put the rosett. in the top of the middle band you hace a bolt sticking up (i'm not sure how) to put through the roach and spreader and then you just put a washer and nut on the top to hold everything down. with a harness like that you can take off a roach whenever you want and put it back on, like a baseball hat, almost. i have also heard that these are very secure and easy to bead. hope this helps.
