hey,
Ok, what do you suggest for roach feathers? I am thinking about using two turkey tail feathers because I seen them in a dream that I had last night. All comments are greatly appreciated.

Traditionally, immature Golden Eagle tail feathers are the best for roach feathers. These are mostly white with black or dark brown tips. The most desired feathers in a Golden Eagle tail for a roach are the outer-most feathers, or "blade" feathers. These two feathers from the same tail are usually what are called a "matched set."

If you cannot obtain these feathers, there are many traders that sell high quality hand-painted white turkey feathers to look like Golden Eagle tail feathers with black or dark brown tips.

If you had a Dream about what Feathers to use - them by all means you should use that as it has come to you in a Dream which is a Vision more or less from the Creator.

You may come across some problems though. In today's Modern Powwow Society, some feel that one who uses anything less that Golden Eagle Feathers in their Roach is - well many othter things (some not so good). Of course that is not true and has been discussed here at powwows.com many times.

As Historian has posted though, it is usual for a Northern Traditional Style Dancer to use Eagle Feathers. But we do have examples from the past (both Native and non-Native) that many kinds of Feathers were used in the Roach Headdress.

In my experience the common feathers used for roaches are golden eagle tail feathers and this is for Northern traditional dancers. Chicken dancers use a variety of different feathers. I would keep with the tradition and avoid fads.

Ok, here is what i forgot to say. I do not dance Northern Traditional. I am dancing Contemporary Traditional. I wish there was a Archive for Contemporary Traditonal but there isn't. All comments are greatly appreciated.

Well, i do agree with using eagle feathers. They look better and contemporary or not I would still say go with the eagle feathers. I have rarely seen anything other than that used and anything else I feel doesn't look as good. Hope this helps,

On that dream with all due respect I would have the dream interpreted by a elder or medicine man. Many things will come to us when we are ready, however your dream did not indicate eagle feathers. I would get a second opinion from a respected elder. My 2 cents.

You had a dream, you should try visions, they got more pull. Just stop eating right now for the next four days and ask " what should I wear great one Turkey feathers or Black Tips?" surely the great one will feel sorry for you and give you the answer.

I do hope you are not serious about the fasting part; cuz those are prayers n not asking for which feathers to use and also not to be made fun of like it's an easy task. Or perhaps that is your tradition but I really dont think so. Same goes for the dream interpretation. If he wants to use turkey feathers let him...since its obvious he doesn't know the true meaning of why u wear those certain kind of feathers in your head roach why bother. If he chooses to be ignorant. What ever you interpret as northern traditional anywayz maybe it isn't.

Well I wasn't going to say anything but since it has been said... the comment about fasting probably wasn't the best idea and (because of your name) I take it your white and therefore you shoild let the real ndn's here take care of talking about dreams and visions, be content with just learning cuz that's all you need to do. Don't take it upon your self to try to teach a sacred part of someone elses culture. My 2cents

Many people take dreams and visions and prayers seriously and ndn or not you have no right to joke about it.
