Bells, leggings, angorra???
'Siyo,
I read in a thread(?) about wearing bells with leggings, but now I can't find the original thread and don't remember what it said. A search didn't turn up anything either. (Probably an operator error.) I always wear leggings (real ugly legs) and am putting together a double row of 7, 1 1/2" nickel sleigh bells per leg. (Total of 28 bells) I would prefer to wear them as anklets rather than around the knee, if this doesn't disrespect tradition (?). Am I correct that angorra is not worn if leggings are? I've seen all kinds of examples of wearing bells with and without angorra, at the knee or ankle or both. I'm not at all sure if what I've seen is proper. Around here, it's not even called Northern Traditional, but Men's Traditional. Probably because in this area, Straight Dancers are as rare as unbroken treaties. Any advice is appreciated. Wa-do. |

You can pretty well wear your bells wherever you want, unless you hve had a vision of a specific place to place the bells or belong to a society with strict rules on where to wearbells. Not a lot of angora back in the bush, so bells & leggings are real common in my partof the country - the old guys were em both high and low and sometimes up on the thigh or on drops fro their waist. More a manner of personal style - which is analogous to a personal vision of the dance/reglia.
In short - do what feels most comfortable to your style of dancing. Back home it is just traditional dancing - no northern. In Minneapolis here they seem to differentiate by calling the styles either "Traditional" or "Southern". That's how I see them do it around here anyhow. mii awe miigwech. david:
it's all personal preference on what you where. i have seen bells worn at the knees, down the legs (an older style) and at the ankles. me personally, i wear them at the ankles. and i have seen angora worn with and without leggings.......there is nothing wrong with that........ it's just not the trendy thing to do right now |
