Advice Needed for Roach Wearing

Siyo,
My son is 4 years old and refuses to wear his roach when he dances. I don't push it because I knwo it can get hot out and he's only in Tiny Tots so it's not really that big an issue, but is there anything I can do to help him maybe want to wear it in the future?

____

"Super glue it to his head?" *L j/k

FancyS:

Kids will be kids. One minute they don't want to do something, and the next minute will be the opposite. As he matures, he will eventually feel out of place if he is the only one not wearing a roach.

Patience and time are the answer to your question.

I think this may help :
on his roach does he have a string that ties it to his chin or does he have a hair lock?
I found as a while back that chin strings can be most un comfortable and a hair lock is more comfortable . also is it possible that the hairs in the roach might be hitting his face and that causes discomfort?

just my 2cents

&c to all ye who inquire it ,

Rob young

One idea to get rid of the shoestrings that I have seen is making a beaded headband that forms a crown and the roach is attached to it. One of the guys I danced with had that rig and it looked sharp and kept everything in place. A Marine LCpl. I met at Tuscaroura (SP) last month is in the process of making a rig since he has no hair at the moment.

Unfortunately I don't. I know I saw a diagram of the concept in an old Ben Hunt book. If I find it, I'll post it. November is too far off, that's the next time I know I will see one.

thanks , that would be great . my hair used to be long enough to braid but my mom decided that short hair would be a good mothersday gift . and I quote "HAPPY MOTHERSDAY, *click, BUZZ*"

Roaching Ceremony

I know wearing a roach can be hot and uncomfortable. If he WANTS to dance...let him dance without one. When he comes of age (and youll know best when that is) you may consider a roaching ceremony. I recently went to one and it was quite moving. It was at a powwow but not during the dance session. A veteran, champion dancer, and respected elder in the community was asked to present the roach and roach feather to the boy (7 years old). The entire countenance of the boy changed after that expirence and he was beaming with joy for the rest of the weekend. Every community does things differently but this was a unique event I wont forget for a while... and I dont think the young man will ever forget it!
