I need help with teaching the right way about traditional dancing and Clothing to alot of boy scouts. I just got done reading the post about a mom asking for help with her sons dance cloths, and all the people did was bust this guys chops. I am a white guy, and i have been raised in the circle. I just want to teach these young boy scouts the right way to dance and how not to insult or disrespect your culture, like some elders thought me along time ago. I love the indian culture and would beat the crap out of anyone who disrespceted your culture and heritage in anyway. I wish i was born a native american. Anyways if anyone can help me with the different types of dance styles i would be very thankful. I know the basic step, the trot, and sneak up steps and how they go. But i was wondering if there were any others? Also can ya'll tell me so i can tell these boys the colors that they need to try to stay away from like holly colors things of that nature.

Ahaw, where I am from each human being has their own holy color or set of colors... so trying to avoid holy colors is gunna be tough in my neck of the woods. ;)
Just make sure their colors match up well.... nothing worse than a dancer that clashes. Also, on a personal note I have a severe dislike of construction flag orange and chartreuse, so I'd advise to avoid those. p.s: Hands aren't for hitting Last edited by sookout sh'nob; 02-09-2004 at 06:06 PM. |

well, it is a crazi world out there when your tryin to make everyone happy. Its a good thing that you are tryin to teach to the younger people, maybe that way we wont have all these people hating on each other. This way also gives these young people a good start for a good foundation. Colors, all native people have sacred colors, maybe that is because all colors are considered sacred. Dance styles vary through different parts of the countries, but mostly it will be the spirit that will move the people. Teach the respect, compassion, generosity, and humbleness of the dancing and the circle and things should be alright. Hope this helped. |

I'm sure there is someone in your area who can help. Theres a ton of straight dancers here in Texas. If they really wanna learn to dance they should find someone to come and teach them. But It wont take a weekend. The person you find should be able to teach you the steps, styles, and other things.
As for regalia DON'T GO STRICTLY OFF A BOOK! Any book out there is probobly ok but not the best thing you can do. Go and meet some people who will be willing to teach you and bring you into the circle. Read the post and learn what you can. Take advice given to you, posters here will usualy give some good advice. Colors are important, You could have the best regalia ever but if the colors are wrong it will look horrible. Try to pick colors that are unique to you and arrange them uniquely. You dont wanna go to a powwow and see a guy wearing the exact same stuff. Look at others rgalia but dont copy. |

Thanks for the info, Ill do my best to teach the scouts what ive been taught. And to STORM i am drawn to Nothern Tradish. There is just something about the dance, the cloths, and the honor and respect that we get and also give. Right now my colors are Like a dark blue, almost lime green or apple green, and orange. It looks good and I like the colors. Ill teach the boys about what u have told me.
Thanks again Colin |

boman19, I am sure you did not mean that the rest of us old straight dancers don't have respect, etc.
There is the same feeling with straight dance and old style grass dance. As you know they are much older dance styles. But Good luck with your endeavors

I didn't mean that theres anything about straight and old style grass dancers. My Little Brother is a straight dancer, And the man who got me started with tradish dancing is a straight dancer. I may start straight dancing in the next few years but right now I am making an investment in my tradish rig with beading and a new bustle.
