Double Beat and Jingle Side

Hey, I'm just a fancy shawler, but I have a quick question.

Is there a difference in beats between a jingle side step and a double beat? Maybe it's just me, but I hear a difference. Sometimes I'll get a double beat and it sounds like a sidestep to me. Not quite sure though. It could have just been the pace of the song.

Who better to ask than a room full of singers!

Good question! Enquiring minds wanna know. Like Me! LOL, am I aging myself now? I think I hear a difference, but, we dont get to many double beats around here, so, Im not sure. Can I practice my double beat to a jingle side until I can find some double beat tunes? LOLOLOL

Lightbulb 2 different songs.....

However the beat might sound similar its not....Now some singers just might be singing these off....So be careful there too....If possible search some Jingle side step songs....Try Little Otter or Kingbird....A group called Maddog put out Crow doublebeat songs.....Listening to these recordings could help you distinguish between the two unique sounds...Good Luck...

so, from what Ive listened to, Ive found more side steps then double beats, and believe me, Ive been looking for more double beats, but, it sounds to me, like double beats have more of a clicky sound to them? Does that sound right?

I agree with you on that. When I'm at a powwow and have a double beat, it usually seems to be a slide.

*what?

Okay, I've lost track a lil' bit...

Clicky, eh, well sometimes when drums start off a double-beat, they hit the edge or side of the drum....like....naw meen?

I dunno, someone help me out...

Haha, o.k., maybe clicky isnt the best way to describe it... so, maybe more of a slappy sound ROFL - kinda like bump click bump click bump click bump click words words more bump clicks then heavier beats, then back to bump click? hahahahaha does that help? I think I just confused myself. How do you describe a sound?
Black Eagle has a song from there CD Straight Up Northern called Double Down that has the bump click (Im assuming is double beat) - and then Blackstone has a song on there CD A Time For Change called Sekwan (sidestep for Jingle) - no bump clicks on that one. Anywho....clicky bump

Lightbulb ....

The doublebeat has a heavy 1st beat and a lighter second....Wheras the side step is even, or at least it should be....Not heavy, light or light heavy...Hope this is easy to understand...Some singers will start a doublebeat on the rim or edge of the drum....Maybe this might be the "clicky" sound?

I have alot of respect for the Kingbird,White, Kelly, Gahbow, and Bellecourt families. Over the years I have sung with them and they have shared information on the Jingle round (side) step dance....

I encourage dancers, singers, etc....To sit down and visit (discuss) some of these particulars with knowledgable people....That's basically what Powwow is all about....
