Seems to me it was talking about the history of THE drum. Not powwow. Not tribal. Not ceremonial, etc. THE drum. You all should read the first post again. Quote:

I had this discussion with a couple of guys I know the other day. They thought that maybe the big drum was adopted from the drum and fife days, when the euros/colonials used them in their "marching bands"

This thread caught my eye because I always wondered about the origin of the big drum myself... so I have a few questions and something to add for consideration.
First the questions; 1) if it did come from white folks or John Phillips Sousa (???) then where did the idea of putting a feather inside them come from. 2) did they put feathers inside the hand drums? 3) and women used hand drums so then why did it become a rule that women don't drum on the big drum? 4) basically I guess I want to know, if the big drum is that new then where did all the protocal with them come from as well? Ok for something to think about... the Haudenosaunee water drums were originally tree stumps hollowed out in the middle by the burn and scrape method, filled with water and then a hide stretched over it. Could these stump stories have derived from the water drum or does the water drum give credence to the possibility that there is some factual base to the stump and stretched hide story?
