You ever notice when you don't have an answer to something you have to try and make some lame azzed "joke" so you can skirt around the topic or issue at hand?

Seems to me it was talking about the history of THE drum. Not powwow. Not tribal. Not ceremonial, etc. THE drum.

You all should read the first post again.

History of the Drum

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can never find anything when I try a search so this may already be on here somewhere.

When did the DRUM itself come to being? When was it first used?

When did hide drums take over for bass drums? Did bass take over hide first?

Are hide drums REALLY more sacred than bass drums or is it because the hide is more TRAD than a bass drum?

(I have been listening to some old 70s tapes from SD and they are ALL bass drums)

I once heard a story of the hunter whose hide dried on an old tree stump..hence the birth of the drum. (paraphrased of course)

anyone?
Notice he said " the DRUM itself"??? Go ahead joke away. It'll be sure to get the attention off of the fact that when someone disagrees with something you say you dismiss it as urban legend or make jokes.

Okay. Have it your way.

I am always teasing....I was and will always be teased....Just how it is....Do I take it personally? Well when I was 10 or so, maybe....Now I just laugh, cause its funny....

Now to be frank...

This is a Board associated with Powwow....This Forum is Northern Singing....

Okay we can go in all kinds of directions, it happens all the time....What do they call it? Freedom of speech? Actually its the very freedom to take your proverbial foot and put it in your proverbial mouth....

Please keep doing it...Laughter is by far the best medicine...

Now back to our regulary scheduled Program (no pun intended...)

Whats next? This song........

Sunny day - Sweepin’ the clouds away,
On my way to where the air is sweet.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street.

Come and play, everything’s A-OK
Friendly neighbors there that’s where we meet
Can you tell me how to get
How to get to Sesame Street

It’s a magic carpet ride. Every door will open wide.
Happy people like you. Happy people who.

Like a beautiful sunny day sweepin’ the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet
Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame street, how to get to Sesame Street, How to get to . . .

BETTER YET......This Song.....

Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination
And when he's tall
he's what we call a dinosaur sensation

Barney's friends are big and small
they come from lots of places
after school they meet to play
and sing with happy faces

Barneys shows us lots of things
Like how to play pretend
ABC's, and 123's
And how to be a friend

Barney comes to play with us
Whenever we may need him
Barney can be your friend too
If you just make-believe him!Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination
And when he's tall
he's what we call a dinosaur sensation

Barney's friends are big and small
they come from lots of places
after school they meet to play
and sing with happy faces

Barneys shows us lots of things
Like how to play pretend
ABC's, and 123's
And how to be a friend

Whenever we may need him
Barney can be your friend too
If you just make-believe him!

I had this discussion with a couple of guys I know the other day. They thought that maybe the big drum was adopted from the drum and fife days, when the euros/colonials used them in their "marching bands"

Don't tell TiPi that.

He's allergic to white people.

This thread caught my eye because I always wondered about the origin of the big drum myself... so I have a few questions and something to add for consideration.

First the questions;

1) if it did come from white folks or John Phillips Sousa (???) then where did the idea of putting a feather inside them come from.
2) did they put feathers inside the hand drums?
3) and women used hand drums so then why did it become a rule that women don't drum on the big drum?
4) basically I guess I want to know, if the big drum is that new then where did all the protocal with them come from as well?

Ok for something to think about... the Haudenosaunee water drums were originally tree stumps hollowed out in the middle by the burn and scrape method, filled with water and then a hide stretched over it. Could these stump stories have derived from the water drum or does the water drum give credence to the possibility that there is some factual base to the stump and stretched hide story?
