Women Lead?

Here's whats up, my family is wanting to start up a drum. there's only 4 of us. But the best singer is my aunt. What is the public opinion about a women lead singer. I'm probaly second best out of the 4 so do you think I should lead. We never plan to contest. This drum will be only for little powwows.

If you're from Spokane, you live in an area that is generally accepting of women singers.

If she is the best singer, then work with her. Since this is a family drum, make a plan, come to a consenses and consider what direction you want the drum to take. I think that is cool that you are wanting to do this as a family as it will make your family stronger; maybe other family members will get interested and it will help them to walk the red road as well.

If your Auntie can kick out the leads and is the strongest singer than go for it. I agree that singing together makes for a stronger family. Sing from your heart and keep up the prayers. The better you sound, the more resistance you will get from folks who think they should be telling your family how to do things. Not every family does things the same way, even within the same tribe. If your family wants to sing together, you have every right to. Every Elder that I have talked to says women have always been a part of the family drum and always will be. The guidelines for family drums have always been different than the all-male, multi-tribal, multi-family drum. Family members tend to be used to each other energies. Most importantly, you all need to be strong and comfortable with yourselves and your drum. Otherwise the nay sayers will do all they can to beat you down. Best of luck to you.

thank you, that is a major spiritual ground setter. that helps more then you know. its still a work in progress but its all good all of the time because the creators heart beats in our steps.
