seriously though, why would you do anything you didnt fully understand the whys and wherefors of ?
not that anything was was wrong about giving tobacco to someone you respect, but things do change depending on who, how when and where you give tobacco.

Was it something you learned from someone else? Was it something you have seen done? Was it something you just know you should do?

MANY people do things just because it is done by everyone else, it is getting too scripted (kinda like in church, most people just go thru the movements and responses becuase of habit) There is a difference in doing things and understanding why and having a reason yourself and just doing things "becuase that is how it is done"

Those people who sit, stand and kneel STILL curse people on the road on the way home, they still pretend they are doing something else when they see a charity collecting on the street corner. Things like that.

but then there are the people that do things to get attention. I saw a lady put a dollar in the salvation army bucket and tap it about 5 times very slowly until it went in the can while looking at the person smiling. You can tell she just wanted to be noticed giving that dollar.

*nods* I was taught that when you do things for others (like charity) you do them quietly and try to do them in a way that no one (except the Creator) knows. Calling attention to yourself devalues the gift and the person being gifted because you create an obligation. Thanks belongs to the Creator.

A little off topic but words I needed to say.

Dude, If you don't know what you are doing, DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

Man! you guys don't understand,

Offering Tobacco:
Offering tobacco is a form of representive the honesty, if they had to speak to another and it
shows the ultimate respect towards another person.

well heres what i do understand,...
giving tobacco has become something of a pan indian custom, something to do just because its being done. and without knowing why. there are several reasons for giving tobacco, several types of tobaccos available for offering.
but honestly,as far as i know not everyone did the tobacco offering thing.to some peoples tobacco was just another crop and trade good. there is nothing universal about ndn culture except we each had our own.sure, cultures and customs overlapped. peoples picked up things as cultures evolved. peoples who didnt have a pipe may have been exposed to the idea through trade or civic interaction and opted to take up the custom. others maybe not.
same thing for offering tobacco. but to give tobacco without knowing why youre giving it seems kinda silly to me. i understand it was given as a show of respect, but why tobacco? what respect is there in just going through the motions? giving of cash works pretty well too. it doesnt have to be a big horse choking wad of cash, just a few bucks. its has a nice impact on the drums morale. it kinda says 'hey, you guys rock, keep drummin!' . and the fact that it doesnt gum up carburators or plug fuel injectors doesnt hurt either.

You would find it enlightening to sit and talk with someone you respect...Someone knowledgable of Singing....There is a direct relation between Tobacco and the Drum....I'll leave it there....However you would be very suprised to find several people who comment on it actually are clueless as well....Smile...Now i'm not saying your clueless...But for some reason other people assume you are....
