It could go either way, for the money and fame or because he has no one else to sing with.

If you pick him up it should be becuase you already know he can sing.

If he drags you down, let him know how your group works.

If someone asks you if they can sing with you, they should know what they are doing already. (that is if it is being done right)

Is a drum hopper a freelancer?

And by drumhopper im not talking about the guys already with a drum who like to jump around at a powwow.

I love them all!

Only they would know, but most probably I think(oh there goes my opinion-this is what gets in trouble) they just love to sing.
Maybe they just love making lots of friends and/or maybe they just like to stand on the edge.
Regardless I love them when they are around and helping.

...

There are differences.....

A gun for hire.......

A gun nobody wants to fire........

A gun who is a hero in his very own mind.....

And Finally a gun that pre dates the muzzleloader........

Go N Figure.....

guns kill!!! stick with the silent but deadlies.

maybe the freelancer just doesnt want to, or is sick of the hassle of coordinating a drum. It is a pain in the azz.

Used 2 B

A Drum a singer and the sticks......additional singers sat down at the descretion of the Drum owner. I like that....Groups are relatively neo-tradish....Seems these days that singers come and go. One weekend there here the next their there.....The core stays the same, but folks are popping around like popcorn.....Every hear the term "Drum Whore"? Uh Oh! That's gonna leave a mark....

esabun is an unknown quantity at this point
I second a lot of things that were said before.

First of all as a freelancer I sing becuz I love to sing! The money is nice if you happen to place but it’s not my motivating factor. I try to travel so that I don’t have to rely on winning or placing just to get gas or eat.

Another reason freelance is cool is it’s tough trying to manage all the issues around a drum. A crew starts off good, but then they wanna take it to the next level- start competing more seriously, travel more, or get a CD together, etc…for whatever reason, the expectations change, and that’s where the stress comes into play more, personnel issues. If you’re on ur own you avoid a lot of that, been there done that. I got little ones so I can’t always make it to every practice or every powwow in the region that the group feels we need to have strong presence at.

You should be aware of letting somebody sit down with you and you should be aware of who you’re sitting with. The guys at the drum should feel comfortable and absolutely they should already know that you can sing. You don’t wanna find out during the contest that the guy isn’t comfortable with a side step beat! ...as a free agent I try to bring that extra dimension that might be missing- an extra lead, more bass, a little shake to go with those fries

That goes both ways- one time early on I was asked to come sit down with a drum that I thought was ok or good, and eventually I pulled up a chair. Anyways one of their regular singers did the downbeats ‘on beat’ and it sounded jacked up. I think the worst was that the lead singer and the other guys didn’t really notice it, or at least say anything about it. Every 2 or 3 songs he would just chime in like that. I think it was usually in the first pushup if he got really excited about that song something would click in his head. The ancient ones would come to him or something Thankfully when he didn’t do anything but sing everything was cool. Also we didn’t get any crow hops for him to get jiggy with ugh haha jk Now I ain’t tryin to act too good, these guys are real cool guys but I learned a certain way and they seemed to do it different at least that one guy did. At least it was just a smaller benefit powwow, but still I don't like to be with a drum that 'practices' at a powwow.

So now if I’m around before the first session and I don't know who's gonna be there I always hang back and wait until I know who’s all there before committing.
