I recently made my first drum completely "from scratch" (except for a pre-fab round maple frame) and it turned out pretty good. Split buffalo hide (it's a little thin for what you'd expect so it sounds a bit "tinnier" too, but not bad and I guess some people like it that way). 28x9". Matching stand. Total of maybe 3-4 hours labor, spread out between soaking the hides, letting wood stain dry, yada yada yada. I also took a partially damaged elk hide off of a 32" octagonal frame, trimmed off the damaged part and stretched the remainder onto another 28x9" round frame. It turned out really good and the leadsinger of the drum's group is quite pleased. I *really* like the deep, rich tone of a thick skinned drum whose voice goes "blump, blump, blump" rather than a tinny "doong, doong, doong". |
