simular drum names???

i was just checking out the indianhouse records website and seen that there was simular name on there compared to drum from NC. and the drum that was on the website had cds from the 70s, is it wrong to call your self a name that is already taken?

Drum names are like family names, they get passed down from generation to generation. Often drum names are specific to a tribe, a band, a town even. To carry a name from another, or previously existing drum group, especially if there is no family or tribal affiliation or relationship seems a bit obscure.

*You know what I think would be kewl!: if drum groups started to name themselves after '80's butt-rock/big-hair bands! That way it would be a little comical and no one would get their feelings hurt!

I sing with a group in Yakama Valley called "Northwest Medicine Horse" aka "Medicine Horse Sobriety Singers". When the group was first founded (I'm told in the early 1990's) it was simply called "Medicine Horse" until somebody found out there has already been a long-established group called that back east somewhere. So the "Northwest" was added, partly to express that our members also come from throughout the Northwest and no longer just the Valley.

Two years ago, I also began working with a youth drum called Midnight Echo. Some people think they were naming themselves this to emulate Midnight Express, however not so. They were practicing late at night and heard their voices "echo" in the gym at the end of a song. Somehow that became their name.

When a group carries a name that simply describes a place (i.e. Big Mountain, Big River) or a creature (Red Eagle, Black Bear) it can be difficult to impossible to do an exhaustive search of the entire country to make sure nobody else has laid claim to that name. One would hope that if both groups of a similar name were by chance at the same powwow, they would be good sports and work something out.

You have got to be kidding....And I only say this because my family name is being used and I don't recall anyone asking US for the use of it...

to top it off, the guy who runs the group is not even cheyenne...I guess I should get off this thread...LOL I still get mad about it.

from traveling to many pow-wows i hear drum names similar to others. i even hear the same name but its the one i know.

i guess its cool if the names sound similar, hopefully those drums are cool with each other.

as for family names, i think they should get permission from the family. I know becuase there is a drum somewhere with the name same as my families last name. but it dont really bother us. at least for now anyways.
