EYABAY vs. BLACKSTONE
I know both drum groups have been out of the big picture for a while now but this isn't just another thread on not whether who is better but who YOU think deserves the most credit for bringing Contemporary music to what it is today.

So would they be considered old school, contemporary. I heard both crews when they were smoking back in the day at the Four Nations powwow in Lewiston, Idaho in 1993. Both were really great groups then. Chiniki Lake was there, Indian Nation, Blacklodge, Cathedral Lakes, Nez Perce Nation. Man there were some wicked groups there dude. Got about 6 hours of tapes there. Still listen to the tapes now and then. My vote would have to be Eyabay.

I would have to say Eyabay. I haven't seen them in a while though. But their songs really wanna make you get up and dance.

Blackstone Singers come from Sweetgrass Rez
This Rez never had a powwow for 25-30 years and started out from scratch-they did it for love of their culture and song. They wanted to inspire the world and I like Eyabay but when you stand over the Blackstone drum their voices are high and loud! they have been in existence since 1980 something I know I have been singing for 34 yrs! Have a good day! ![]() |

Sage Point was there and if I remember right, they started not too long prior to this. I thought they were going to be a really good group. Heard one of their CDs and was impressed in 95. When I first started singing this was our first big powwow. We didn't know too many songs and we were too stupid to be intimidated by the drum groups that were there. Probably still the best quality of drums I have ever seen at one powwow. |

you cant even compare these two drums. eyabay has given contemp. the songs and singing style eyabay has brought to the pow wow trail and indian country changed alot of things. and eyabay can still jam.so i would have to say eyabay.

I think the contemp credit goes to Blackstone. They made word songs cool to listen to back in the day. And those ol' school slow jams are still classics sung at powwows every now and then.
Then, I think that Eyabay deserves credit for making contemp music what it is today. Style and intensity was what they brought to every powwow back in their day. Standing behind them, or even 7 rows back, you could still feel the " vibes ". So, I say they are both pioneers of comtemp music, and stand eye to eye when to comes to who deserves credit. Thanks for all the good music!
