ole school!!!!! PIGEON LAKE vs. ASSINABOINE JRZ????

Now look back into your old history books (cassette tapes/8 traxes) and see if anyone out there rememberz theze two old tyme jammin groupiez (now retired namez) from tha 80's n early 90's when they ruled tha circut.

I got an old schemitzun video when Stoney park won one time and Pigeon lake wuz a hostin dat powwow or somthin, they was like drum #1.
on another note i saw Curtis Assinaboine and old friends jammin out as Assinaboine JRS at a small powwow up mah way this year, but only sang a couple o' intertribalz and a men's buckskin tune. they wur bringin out them 80's tunes they used to make when brotha Ferlin wuz around.

hhwstcrowd:

I remember traveling the Canadian circuit when Pigeon Lake was on top of their game. Francis Green and Dennis Lightning used to also carry some of their leads. I am indebted to the Pigeon Lake singers for keeping me in their homes, feeding me putting up sweats and sharing information on Cree culture. They were/are good people.

The Assiniboine Jrs. also had their heyday a little after Pigeon Lake's popularity. They also had a great drum and travelled the powwow circuit far and wide.

Snaggin NDN,

Great drum groups come and go. Young voices of new singers seem to filter in and replace the great singers of yesteryear. But as things evolve, in 10 years, the top drums of today will eventually be replaced by new drums with new sounds and new crews.

~Pigeon Lake vs Assinaboine Jrs.~

HOLAY!! I'm undecided on this one... Geez, that brings back some fond memories. Last time I heard these drums jam was way back in the Late 80's & Early 90's.
Pigeon Lake @ Window Rock & Assinaboine Jrs @ Casa Grande.

This one is way close. Both drums rocked it solid back in the day, but I will lean ever so slightly towards Pigeon Lake. I thought they sounded strong live, but they I heard a recording of them at a home town pow-wow and it was unreal.

Those Assiniboine boys used to sing with Myron Reday & Red Nation. Then they started their own group. All good songs. I can hear them songs in my mind.

They also sang with Sioux Assiniboine. I can't think of his first name right now but his last was Brown. kickass songs.

Pigeon Lake had them really nice kickin' back and just listen tunes.

I'm not voting. They're both right up there in the old school dep't.

That's him. I thought of it after i posted.

One of the longest songs I heard was at Whitebear. Red Nation & Sioux Assiniboine alternated singing a whistle song to honor all the whistle men at the powwow. They didn't expect that there would be that many. 16 guys blew their whistles on these 2 drums until Steve Charging Eagle brought it to an end. There were at least 8 more guys waiting to honor the song with their whistles. Curtis and the late Ferlin were singing with Red Nation.

Assiniboine Jr's were on top of their game years ago....You can understand their music! Just saw Cecil @ GON....matter of fact just heard some Pigeon lake from the 80's....Slamming Cree music!
