Just a lot of bashing happens in here and I find it a lil annoying b.c a lot of these people dont know what they are talking about, all they know is what they read in books, or what they've been told by their cousins husbands wife;s sister who actually attends ceremonies n stuff. Ive been raised this way.. I was born n raised on my rez, and all I know is Im sure of who I am so it dosent really matter what people say.. you know what I mean?

I know you got good intentions OjiSweety. But as for some others they seem to just follow what everyone else says, without even having a clue.

Yes, I do understand what you are saying. Chimeegwetch for your understanding too. *hugz*

No...No...NO...I remember being taught that women are not supposed to sit a drum. they are suposed to stand behind and sing, the women standing is a sign of respect and honor.

I would not personally sit at a drum with a stick; but my tribe does allow women at the drum. I've heard a couple of really good all women drums in my lifetime. But I just wouldn't want to ever do this, myself.

All Women Drum!

Yes, I support women Drumming, reason being when our men went off to war. Many never came back The women were left behind to teach the children our traditions which included singing and drumming. You do not have to agree but these things did happen. It takes nothing away from the spirit of the men and their place in life.

I was raised with this too.. but there was another good point made that we cannot always be sure why women decide to drum, so i think we should be careful of how we judge them. I agree too that there are the so called wannabes... white people drumming? obviously ignorance has set in and they either dont understand the significance of the drum or they do and dont care, these people will be taken care of tho either by elders that have the right to take them out or by the creator when they answer to him. As long as the drum is respected and people are following the teachings given to them by those in authority to do so.. then i feel that it is ok.
Just my thought on the subject.

i have no problem with an all women's drum group. i have heard women drum and sing, they were just as well as the men.

from what i read in this thread, it sounds like having or not having a women's drum group is a regional.

I support the women on the drum. I once heard that before the non natives came over, women had their own drums and their own songs... I have had a dream of a all women drum group and I need to talk to an elder to see what the significance of this dream means... Right now, since I'm the only person who is willing to help our school drum group, the boys are learning the songs from me. It doesn't seem right to me, but I have asked many drummers to come and help this drum group of young boys, but as for now no man has stepped up yet. I will keep doing what I'm doing to help them because they are seeking to learn. I would love to start my own women's drum group someday if it is accepted by the elders on my rez.

nope

I was always taught that a woman shouldn't sing at the drum. I had a American Indian music class and the main objective (which I was againist) was to teach drumming to students. I almost got an F until I explained that I was always told women shouldn't be behind at the drum.

Mankillers Drum group... made up of all women?

Hmmmmm?

Do you think an all male drum called the "Lady Killers" would go over big at a powwow near you?

No, the women should not start their own drum group because that is not what the women singers should do. if they want to at a drum they need to sing behind the mens and sing to make the music sounf beautiful when they sing at the drum

I disagree to have women singing at the drum around the southern part of the united States. if the women want to sing they can but they need to sing behind the men folks that is singing at the drum.

Well i feel sorry for who eva gets stuck with you. Don't you know that there are some women that could song just as hard, and as loud as the men. Well i guess you don't really care bout that, do you?
