Setting The Record Straight!
coupcounter49, who are you to say the singers at Mandaree's drum are a bunch of drum hoppers. As you might have noticed at Morongo, sitting at that drum was the Now lead singer of Mandaree-Sidrick "Mister" Baker, well knowledged in Hidatsa songs (Son of the late Billy Baker). Billy Baker was the one who made Mandaree Singers what they are today, and that's a well known respected drum. Sitting there at that drum in Morongo was Mister's son, and myself his nephew (raised and taught how to sing by Billy Baker). Also there were members of the Three Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara), all given the right to sit at our drum, and members of other tribes either related to us or able to sing our style of singing, and that is Original. As you might know, there are only 6 or so original Mandaree Singers alive today, all well in age. They don't travel long distances anymore, but we still carry on their teachings and sing as they once did. We still sing the songs composed by Billy Baker, songs that can still Rock the powwow arena. So who are you to say we don't know OUR songs, I didn't see you sitting there next to us. I think you are one who is just jealous of ones gifted to sing, I bet you couldn't even sing a Hidatsa song yourself, or if asked to sing a honor song, even sing the appropriate one. I know for a fact we can! So before you open your mouth, get your facts straight and open your eyes and see who is really sitting at Mandaree's drum, and that's Mandaree Singers! Oh...keep standing behind our drum too!....too scared to reveal your name and face the fact that you aren't a Mandaree Singer!
