Proud of my Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band association

I would like to respond to Mary Annette Pember’s letter in the March 17, 2008, edition of NFIC.

I wonder too about her “agenda.” First of all, why all the bashing of the SNURB? In that same issue, there is a group of Native Americans that are offering “memberships” to illegal aliens to get them citizenship status. There are always arguments over who is truly “Chief” of various Nations. She seems to only concentrate on one group, Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band.

I read your reply in the NFIC. I am no one to judge anyone over anything. I think the reason why some Shawnee here in Oklahoma don't take the SNURB serious is because the people here keep there culture and ceremonial ways very private. I got in trouble for saying Shawnee words to a non Shawnee. They also keep powwow ways real far from the ceremonial practices. They see the SNURB members on movie credits, soundtracks, stage shows and thats not how they are down here. I was in California and a guy did an exhibition of a Shawnee ceremonial dance at a powwow. The older people lost it! They said that dance was given by the Creator to the Shawnee and the Shawnee alone to keep us unique from the rest of the world. I see their point sometimes, but this guy wasn't even close. Anyways in my own opinion I think most people today are lost because they lost their own individual culture so the try to find one. Now you have White Guys and some Natives doing rap music and new age people doing the things that they do. In the end everyone should just be trying to get close to and please the the Creator if your Shawnee, White, whoever.
Just to let both sides of the argument know. My bro said megwich was thank you in Ojibwa I know its not a Shawnee word.
