Investigation shows Cherokee smoke shops complying with law
Tulsa, Oklahoma (AP)
A newspaper investigation indicates that Tulsa-area smoke shops licensed by the Cherokee Nation are complying with a tobacco tax compact between the tribe and the state of Oklahoma. The Cherokee licensees are using an 86-cent tax stamp, the rate set by the 2004 compact. The Tulsa World’s investigation also found that Tulsa-area smoke shops licensed by the Creek Nation still use 6-cent tax stamps, a tax level typically reserved for shops located near state lines. |
