*update* Makah Whale Hunt Case

Makah whalers enter guilty plea in rogue hunt

06:16 PM PDT on Thursday, March 27, 2008

SEATTLE - Three Makah tribal members changed their plea to guilty Thursday, and two others will go to trial over the hunt of a California gray whale last September.

Frankie Gonzales, William Secor and Theron Parker all pleaded guilty to knowingly taking a marine mammal in U.S. waters. They did not have a federal permit for the hunt, nor did they have permission from the tribe.

Their future hunting rights will not be affected by their plea, a concern they had at an earlier hearing on Monday. They are expected to serve no jail time in exchange for the guilty plea.

Two others - Wayne Johnson and Andrew Noel - will go to trial April 8.

The Makah have been whalers for centuries, and have sought to resume the hunts as part of their heritage.
