Navajo elder honored by school his family founded

Birdsprings, Arizona (NFIC) The Navajo Medicine Man known as Little Singer noticed an unnatural silence in the air about his community. He realized that what was missing was the laughter of children – so he approached his community – Birdsprings – and made his concern known. The children were gone; living away from home in boarding schools in order to receive elementary and high school educations. The community responded whole-heartedly and began building a school of its own. It was incorporated in 1978, and was named for the old singer who had since passed on, though his family had provided land from their customary use area to build the school. Little Singer’s son, Benny Singer, has watched over the school since its inception. |
