More Nisqually delta turning back into estuary
Olympia, Washington (AP)
Five south Puget Sound watershed groups have pooled their state salmon recovery money to spend $2.4 million to help remove some dikes at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. That will restore tidewaters on another 700 acres of the estuary. This is in addition to 140 acres of former cattle ranch that the Nisqually Tribe already has turned back to the waters. Susan Zemek of the state Recreation and Conservation Office says the cooperation by watershed groups recognizes the Nisqually delta is a nursery and feeding ground for endangered chinook salmon and other fish. |
