Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and mental retardation in the United States and other countries. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder can occur in any population where alcohol is consumed. It occurs at a much higher rate in Native communities as a result of the increased incidence of alcohol dependence among American Indians. Alcohol is the most damaging drug that can be used during pregnancy.
