Yakama Nation strikes new cigarette tax deal with WA state

By Shannon Dininny
Yakima, Washington (AP)

A new cigarette tax agreement with the Yakama Nation will drive up smokeshop prices and send all the revenue to the tribe, but allows the state access to reservation smokeshops to monitor pricing and compliance with the tax stamp.

The deal, announced during mid-December, calls for the Yakamas to phase in a cigarette tax over eight years, starting at 80 percent of the state cigarette tax and ending at nearly 88 percent. Based on today’s tax rates, the tribal tax starts at $16.20 per carton and ends up at $17.75 per carton.
