Some Higher Ed members not ready to abandon UND nickname talks with tribes
Grand Forks, North Dakota (AP)
Some members of the state Board of Higher Education say they are not ready to abandon formal talks with Sioux tribal leaders about the future of the University of North Dakota’s “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo. Board President John Q. Paulsen has said he will suggest a discussion of the subject among board members. His comment came after tribal officials insisted their opposition to the nickname and logo will not change. Under a lawsuit settlement with the NCAA announced in late October, UND would retire the nickname and logo after three years if it cannot get the support of Sioux tribes. |
