Flutists
It seems like at a lot of Indian gatherings (including powwows) there are Indian flutists either live or on CD when there is a dinner break.
About 30 years ago, Indian flute playing was a dying art. Now there is unquestionably a resurrection and rennaissance (aye, big word!) Any hoo, I want to start a list of "NATIVE" flute players and flute makers. Please feel free to add on to this list? Okay here goes: R. Carlos Nakai Joseph Fire Crow (Da' Crow!) Kevin Locke Robert Mirabal Robert "Tree" Cody Tom Mauchahty-Ware William Guiterrez Fernando Cellicion John Ranier, Jr. Charles Littleleaf Douglas Blue Feather Edmund and Sonny Nevaquaya Tommy Wildcat Mary Youngblood Keith Bear Andy Vasquez This list is just the tip of the iceburg of well known/award winning NATIVE flutists. There are plenty of others. Does Kokopelli count?

theres one more guy who deserves mention..... james starkey. i dont know if hes won any awards for his flutes yet. hes kinda new to the craft, but hes an outstanding artist and he brings alot of that skill and tallent to his flutemaking. i know he got slighted at musical echoes a couple years ago and took second or third in the general arts and crafts contest with a ledger drawing, but his flute should have won.seems like its the same people who win every year

....You mentioned Mary Youngblood in the first list.Great flutist in my opinion. There are two other lady flute players I find are very good. The first is Hovia Edwards(Shoshone-Bannock),a fantastic young player, and Christine Ibech(Cree),who actually studied with R.Carlos Nakai.I know that traditionally, women didn't play, but it looks like that's changing really quickly.
...Also,whatever happened to Douglas Spotted Eagle?...keep smilin'1 |

apache, Just when you think something is traditionally right, someone will get on here and buck the norm. I bet somewhere there is a group of Natives whose women traditionally made and played flutes. Thank you for sharing the names of two women flute players. Douglas Spotted Eagle? He is an "adopted Indian." Not Indian by birth.

getting up to the ranch to 'study' with nakai isnt quite as prestigious as one might think. they schedule these events every summer. it's , some 1200$ to get in, then another 700$ or so for the workshops, they have more private accomodations as compared to the dorm style housing available for an adition fee too.oh, you also have to have the ken light flute to play while youre there so thats another 100$. i think by the time youre done its about 2200$ for the week long 'flute camp' it is first come first serve though, and space is limited...to about 30, i think. not to take anything away from her playing ability, but its not like she was hand picked.but hey, if i had the funds, id go. but i think id be more interested it chatting with ken light than carlos.

i love Joe Fire Crow!! he is soo cool, i keep bumping into here and there at various events here in CT. i believe his dad died last spring sometime, don't know from what.
about Douglas Spotted Eagle, he "retired" sometime ago. i think there were a bunch of family issues that made him retire. |
