tons of artists came out to support on a super hott july summer day and no they weren't gettin' paid at all!!...*gasp*... they came out to support the culture and thank the followers for keepin' hip hop alive!

Miss Quoted

Dear brother,

In your poem here, you write: "I think what the ESSENCE of what hip hop is about; I mean, I think what you people can attest to it."

I listened to your words and let them take me to your point, as much as I could hear it. I did not however hear in those words what this essence is.

For me, this culture can be positive, but I have a hard time accepting it fully because I also see a very negative, very harsh reality in Hip Hop culture; that it is also associated with gangsters, drug use, violence and things that are not socially productive.

I agree with you that everything "Hip Hop" doesn't mean this, but there is an association and that association does cause others to think twice.

I would love to hear your opinions on how Hip Hop particularly could help native American society today and how you'd propose to charge that cause.

You see, I guess I too in a way am into the essence of things, like you claim. I just have different issues to look at I suppose.

My thanks for your thoughts.

Walk well.

Brooklyn is a jewel in the rough
Real Hip Hop

I have to co-sign this thread.

I was in South Dakota this summer talking to other natives about underground v.s. mainstream. We also talked about how our songs were different (we have our own groups) seeing that he grew up on the rez and I'm city...hence my powwows.com name.

When I think about the music I listened to as a kid and the stuff they are making now and calling hip-hop, it makes me sick. Monotonous beats. Weak skills and subject matter. Degrading women. Not caring about how the younger generation reacts to their messages.

It sucks.

What I love about NYC, though, is that the real hip-hop is still there. People getting in a cypher and bringing raw skills. The same thing is happening on the rez. I've heard cats flow and talk about Native issues. A beautiful thing.

I gotta say being a music junkie as I am I can deal with some hiphop, But it does drive me nuts when I hear the same beat or sample running through so many of the main stream.
when I hear a mix of a tune or some old school music elemment incorporated into the rap its good. when the rap is strong and feels real to what I can relate to it really says somthing I remember or have felt or thought thats cool.

Because I belong to that over forty group I don't listen to it alot
I do have three grown kids and I have claimed a tune or two into our collection from thiers.

the rap it self does somtimes remind me old the way back when old blues straight out of the delta country from the south.
Some of those old tunes had alot to say.
for me if the music part doesn't grab me first I miss what is being said. But thats just an opinion from and old mom
I gotta be grabbed by the beat or the tune first then I'm hooked and then the lyrics speak out right to the inside of me

I'mma hafta say it: you know how some people say they can't stand to hear hip hop and call it rap crap and all that.

You know what? I feel the same way about country music and punk rock or whatever that is.

So, besides my native tunes, I'm hip hop till I die!

*not directed at anyone, just lettin' you know how I feel!

Well, this is a pretty interesting thread. You guys sound so cool and knowledgeable! A few months back I was in my kitchen and my husband was on the computer and I hear this song on the speakers and I was like "hmmm, who's that, sounds pretty good." Then I walk over to check it out and lo and behold it's these indian guys (and gal) with this cool video and I was completely blown away! It was War Party's One for All. I listened to the lyrics on that song and some of their other songs and I am just a big fan. It was so real and just hit a chord in me that it almost brought me to tears! As I was listening I was thinking, now this is what kind of "rap music" I wouldn't mind my kids hearing, something real and positive and that it was from natives, even better. I don't know all the underground stuff you guys are talking about but I really love War Party! They are cool.....

Right ON Gurl! I"m glad you have begun to see the complete distinction between commercial 'RAP/HIP HOP" and Real HIP-HOP.
There is much positivity in Hip-Hop, it's almost spoken word/slam poetry put to a killer beat/s usually with a DJ.

Hip-Hop is very positive and it has qualities all it's own. It just makes me plain feel good. It makes me happy, almost like NOFX does for me, although their a Punk band.

If you dig on Hip-Hop with positive messages, I highly recommend Jurassic 5 and Blood of Abraham. They rap very intelligently and poignantly. I recommend J5's Power In Numbers album and Quality Control. Quality Control is one of the best hip hop albums of all times, as far as I'm concerned. It's friggn seamless. There isn't a bad track on that album.

Blood of Abraham's Idollar Tree album is kick @$$ too.

and as a footnote, I highly recommend Digable Planets, their from the 90's and only put out two LP's, Blowout Comb and Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space). This trio of MC's featured a female MC named Ladybug Mecca. Just good smooth, jazzy stuff.

Gosh I just love hip hop music!

The group you mentioned sounds killer too. I'll have to check those cats out.

Peace,
OD

The revolution of hip hop is upon us. Hip hop was meant to be the voice of the voiceless, educational and good for the people and good for the "struggle".....when the money got good....the music went downhill, all you get to hear now on a regular is the millionaires making money exploiting the very voice they are supposed to represent and making a bad name for hip hop. People are gettin sick of it and I'm SO glad they're finally startin to feel me. Support hip hop, real hip hop....lets get it back to how it was meant to be!

The question running around these days is whether or not true Hip Hop is dead. A child of the 70's and 80's, I've seen Hip Hop go through many phases, from party fun lines, to political expression, to personal attacks, and now this huge influx of southern booty rap appears rampant. So when my son showed an interest in being an MC, I wanted to know what angle he'd take.

He was very interested in the categories I call from rapper to poet. The lowest level being a rapper (Bow Wow) who hopes to ascend to an MC (Ludacris/TI), who with skill becomes a lyricist (Jay Z/Nas), and with time and experience, hopefully becomes a poet(Mos Def, Talib Kweli, & Common). My son said he wanted to become a poet. I cautioned him, saying, the poets in hip hop don't always get signed, rarely have clips on MTV Cribs, but always hold the respect of their peers.

So what did my husband and I do? We immersed our son and his cousin into the roots of hip hop, drenching them in the higher classes and now they are on their way. At times they are tempted to dummy down their lyrics and styles to fit the norm, but we warm them that makes them just like everyone else.

And as for other Native rappers, Canada is the beholder of some gem stones. Check out Rez Official, a slammin' collective of hard hitting MCs and lyricists. My favorite is Drezus. War Party also has much heat.

In the mean time, check out The Thobacks, who include my son, Yung 1 and his cousins Tonio and Dj AmBooGie at:
www.myspace.com/thobackmuzik

In addition to something different, you'll find Drezus on their top.
