Best Native metal guitarist who got kicked out of his band and then fell off the face of the earth? Clint Lowry (Lumbee) formerly of Sevendust, now who knows where.... Best Native metal band you probably never heard of, and who's probably not even around anymore? Native Blood from the Shiprock area.... I saw them about 15 years ago in the Shiprock fair parade. They were playing on a flatbed trailer, w/ a generator and an a$$-load of PA gear in the truck that was pulling them. They were playing Slayer's "War Ensemble" as they rolled past where I was, and I must say they were playing it pretty spot on given that they were standing on a trailer in stop-and-go parade traffic. Best Metal singer who alot of morons thought was Native, but who's actually just an Italian dude from New York City? Joey Belladona (formerly of Anthrax). A close 2nd is Anthony Keidis of the the Red Hot Chili Peppers (ok, not really METAL, but oh well) - NOT an NDN despite his NW Coast tatoo designs and the frequent "Apache" references in his lyrics (and that one line in "Give it Away" where he sings "get smart get down with the powwow").

Other singers/musicians that were supposed to be Native but are still a little bit questionable:
Shania Twain - I think it was just her step daddy that was Native Wayne Newton - Uh.... Kitty Wells - Ummmm...I guess so Beyonce Knowles - I don't care whatchu say about all them other ones, don't nobody be sayin anything bad about my girl! D@mn, I love that girl! Anyways, more bests: Best Womens Groups: Walela, Ulali Best Underground Rap: The real 'War Party Thugs' from Seattle were kickin out hits long before the CAN group. Haven't heard much from them since but at the time, they had some of the freshest sounds from the streets as far as Nativez goes. Best ol' Skool Recordings: War Dance Songs of the Ponca Vol. I and II. From about 1966 or 1967. One of the best. Best Run at the Crossover from Tradish music to country/folk: Edmund Bull's Indian Boy album or something like that; that was pretty alright Best All Time Greats: Keith Secola, Paul Ortega, Carlos Nakai...couple others I can't think of right now. Best Christmas Album Sang in Cree: Winston Wuttnee!! Geez that guy Best Song about John Wayne's Teeth: Vaugh Eaglebear from the soundtrack to Smoke Signals Best Overuse of a Bone Choker to Identify oneself as a real Indian: Micki Free

Hey Victor,
What about Willie Nelson? Hes got these long az braids and stuff.... jeez. Seriouly, I got to question the choice for best looking female artist, cause I got the hots for Irene Bedard. And you cant forget about the best Blues band, Indigenous. I gotta agree, NDN cars is a good one to listen to on the way to the powwow, but when you are getting psyched up and dressed for dancing, nothing beats Wailin Blues. Howabout... best movie soundtrack? My pick would be Smoke Signals, that one has more top notch songs than any album put to disk, but there is another one that is really cool to listen to when you just want to mellow out. The dude is not really native, but his name is David Arkenstone, and the album title is "Spirit Wind". It is from the movie "Legend of the Spirit Dog". I cant find it, havent watched it, but the soundtrack is cool enough that I want to watch it. It has David Spotted Eagle on the flute. Best tradition/rock mix has got to be Red Thunder hands down. The music just moves you spiritualy. Best modern rock, Robbie Robertson, "Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy" This is another good album to play LOUD on the way to the pow wow, or any other public place for that matter when you want to draw blank stares fromthe non-indigenous people of this country. And if you really wanna make them angry... pop in John Trudell, lol Derek |

Forgot all about Indigenous and R. Robertson. Sorry about Irene Bedard, though. She doesn't play for the team you think she plays for.............................aye ![]()
