Hopi, Navajo tribes settle land dispute
Hopi, Navajo tribes settle land dispute
Last Update: 10/13/2006 9:12:54 AM By: Associated Press WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) - The Navajo and Hopi tribes have settled a 40-year-old dispute over reservation boundaries. The Hopi Tribal Council voted 18-0 on Wednesday in favor of an intergovernmental compact with the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation’s territory surrounds the Hopi reservation. The dispute focused on 700,000 acres of Navajo land that the Hopis had claim as their aboriginal homeland. The agreement provides for religious access and use by members of each tribe on the other tribe’s land. It also would lift a construction ban imposed in 1966 because of the dispute. The ban severely limited development in the area. Even minor problems such as broken windows couldn’t be fixed on disputed land unless approved by the Hopis. hmmmmmmm, well my families land is right in the middle of all that, so I wonder what 700,000 acres is part of all that..... What is wierd is that the Hopi's had all this land to develop near our home but never did...its still all empty. I know the families out there will not develop anything either, unless its the newer generation. The traditional families I know don't want to bother with it, they like it the way it is..... It's good though that at least a legislative thing was done to call a 'truce' but we'll probably always have that 'bitter battle' goin on, like it has for 100's of years now. I think its just Shirley's last attempt to get more votes........ayeeeeeee... LOL... hope they don't steal any more of our sheep. hahaha jokes.

oh gosh.... I just was on the phone with mah sis and mah moms.... this isn't that good of a thing. And, it was a political thing for Joe Shirley's last attempt to get votes. Peeps, there were a bunch of secret meetings that were held between the 2 officials and the council. What hurts our peeps the most is that the family and land that is affected is that they don't even know what was in those papers or what happened in the meetings. Apparently all (well only there are only 2) of the officials of that area were directly opposed to this legislation. So the papers had it wrong when they said it was an 18-0 vote, it wasn't. What this hurts is the value of the lands and that everything was turned over to the state, the Federal had nothing to do with this. Mah sis is the VP of the chapterhouse and has more inside into all this, we talked about it last night, but when I get back from home, i'll update ya'all more on this.
