KNBN-TV updated 7:50 p.m. CT, Wed., Dec. 17, 2008 Lakota Nation Invitational more than just basketball - KNBN-TV- msnbc.com Rapid City - Thousands of high school sports fans are in Rapid City for one thing: the Lakota Nation Invitational. But, it's much more than just basketball. For the last 32 years, the LNI tournament has grown into the event it is today. It began as just an eight team basketball tournament and now it has more than 30. But, the tournament has expanded well beyond the basketball court to showcase the talents of more students. Bryan Brewer, LNI Tournament Director, "A number of years ago we started with some of our cultural things. Doing cultural things not only for the non-Indians, but to train and teach our young people some of our traditions things like that." Storytelling event a success at LNI The cultural events include Pow-Wow dancing, hand games, boxing, and even storytelling. This is the second year the storytelling event has made an appearance at the tournament. Storytelling and storytellers are an important part of the Lakota culture. It gives high school students an opportunity to share their favorite lessons that represent their culture. Jerome Kills Small, LNI Storyteller Judge, "We have that rich interchange of weaknesses and strengths. It helps to learn by that circle. And I think that kinship system was very strong because of that, that we had been able to communicate. You know, tongues were invented for a reason. That's what I say." ******* 32nd Annual Lakota Nation Invitational Tournament December 17, 18,19, 20, 2008 Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Rapid City, South Dakota Schedule of Events December 16 Put up Tipis - Arena Move in Day for Vendors - 5:00p.m. Art Show Set Up - Rushmore Hall - All Day LNI Board Meeting - Room 101, Arena 4:00pm Fellowship of Christian Athletics Banquet 5:30 – Arena Coaches and Officials meeting at 6:30pm. - Arena December 17 Girls Basketball Games - Civic Center Arena 10:00a.m. Pine Ridge vs Crazy Horse 11:30a.m. Red Cloud vs Flandreau Indians 1:00 p.m. Lower Brule vs Little Wound 2:30 p.m. St. Francis vs Cheyenne Eagle Butte 4:00 p.m. Standing Rock vs Umonhon Nation 5:30 p.m. Todd County vs Takini 7:00 p.m. Crow Creek vs Custer 8:30 p.m. Hill City vs White River Boys Basketball Games - Ice Arena 10:00a.m. Red Cloud vs Takini 11:30a.m. White River vs Crazy Horse 1:00 p.m. Little Wound vs Flandreau Indians 2:20 p.m. Pine Ridge vs Lower Brule 4:00 p.m. Cheyenne Eagle Butte vs Crow Creek 5:30 p.m. Standing Rock vs St. Francis 7:00 p.m. Umonhon Nation vs Hill City 8:30 p.m. Custer vs Todd County Teca Wacipi Okolakiciye Pow Wow - Rushmore Hall South 11:00am to 5:00pm Coordinator: Mike Carlow Art Show - Rushmore Hall North 9:00am - 6:00p.m. Coordinator: Leah Peterson Lakota Language Bowl, LaCroix Hall A Coordinator: Carmen Eagle Pipe 9:00a.m. - Rules Meeting and registration 10:00am - Competion starts Story Telling competition starts at 10:00 am in Room 101 Coordinator: Doris Giago LNI Business Plan Competition starts at 10:00 am in Room 102 (Sponsored by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Credit and Finance Program) Coordinator: Twaney Brunsch Student Dance 9:00p.m. Rushmore Hall North Coordinator: John Miller December 18 Girls Basketball games - Girls Games will be played at the Ice Arena All Boys Basketball games will be held at the Civic Center Arena All Games start at 10:00am Cheerleader competition - 7:30a.m. Civic Center Arena Coordinator: Jeanne Horse Art Show 9:00a.m. - 6:00p.m. Rushmore Hall Coordinator: Leah Peterson Knowledge Bowl (Academics)- 10:00am - 6:00pm - Lacroix Hall C Coordinator: Cody Russell LNI Business Competition starts at 10:00am - Room 101 Coordinator: Twaney Brunsch Hand Game Tournament - 9:00a.m. Registration and sponsors meeting Room 101 10:00pm-Competition starts - Rushmore Hall North Coordinator: Roger White Eyes Jr. ROTC practice 10:00am – 1:00pm Rushmore Hall Jr. ROTC Regulation and Exhibition Competition - 1:00pm. 4:00pm Rushmore Hall Coordinator: Major Iwan Bear Literacy Jamboree: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Rushmore Arena North: All activities are free.
