Book recalled after 'Native' author exposed as fraud
Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Riverhead Books is recalling all copies of “Love and Consequences," a memoir about a half-Native girl who grew up amid gangs and violence in Los Angeles, after its author was revealed to be a fraud.

Author Margaret B. Jones is really Margaret Seltzer, a 33-year-old white woman who was raised by her biological family in an affluent area of the city. She admitted to The New York Times that she fabricated her claims of being a Native foster child in an African-American family.

Jones' story unraveled after the Times published a glowing profile and positive review of the book, which was due on shelves today. Jones' biological sister recognized her photo and contacted the Riverhead Books to tell them the truth.

My father was Chiricahua...My mother is Irish and Italian and I grewup in the streets of new jersey amid lots of gang violence...You mean I could write a book about the carnage and poor choices ive seen people make and make some money...I know alot more about NJ gangs than what it is to be Apache...I wish it was the other way around.

Unhappy

Just like Blakknife,I too know what it's like to live among gang violence.Spent a big part of my life living with mom in the Bronx, and saw lots of drug and gang related activities, including witnessing many gang fights and on a few occasions, watched the police throw a sheet over the latest victim. It's something I would rather forget than to write a book about, but I'm not surprised at what people will attempt to cash in on.

Not a fan of any kind of lying

Well she must have a good imagination anyway. Lots of people write books about things they have not personally experienced.
I don't get why she would lie about it. Most readers probably wouldn't take the time to find out out if it was about her life anyway. I guess people are always looking for some kind of gimmick. I always thought I could finally break into the New York art scene if I just painted with my teeth or something. I hear there
is an elephant that sells paintings at the zoo.
I am creative but I am not a fan of any kind of lying.
I agree with jwhitley. Why not just say it is fiction.
The ironic thing is that people will probably want to read it now.
